Galen Dean Stucky (born December 17, 1936 in McPherson , McPherson County , Kansas ) is an American materials scientist.

Live and act

Stucky earned his Bachelor of Science degree from McPherson College in 1957 and his Ph.D. in 1962. in physical chemistry from Iowa State University . In his dissertation he worked on the interface between crystallography and organometallic chemistry and investigated the synthesis , the NMR spectrum , the growth of single crystals and the structure of the Grignard compound . From 1962 to 1963 he was a post-doctoral student with Clifford Shull in the physics department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). There he investigated the oscillation effect in the scattering of polarized electrons in pyroelectric crystals. After attending a three-month workshop with Per-Olov Löwdin at the Institute of Quantum Chemistry at the University of Florida , he became Assistant Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1964 , where he was full professor from 1972 to 1980. From 1979 to 1981 he worked at Sandia National Laboratories and from 1981 to 1985 in the research and development department of DuPont . He then moved to the University of California, Santa Barbara , where he is a professor in the Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry and, since 1993, in the Faculty of Materials Science . He is an honorary professor at Fudan University in Shanghai and a visiting professor at Peking University .

Stucky designs and synthesizes new porous materials for various applications such as catalysts , separation processes and in optics. He deals with molecular sieves , mesoporous solids , thermoelectricity , optoelectronics and the use of biomineralization for in vitro material synthesis . He published more than 600 scientific papers .

Since 2014 Thomson Reuters has counted him among the favorites for a Nobel Prize ( Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates ) due to the number of his citations .

Galen Stucky is married to Kaaren and has two sons.
