In 1835 a group of settlers from New York purchased the land for the first settlement a year later.
Knox College , which still exists today, was founded by George Washington Gale in 1837. The newly emerging place was named after Gale.
The first slave liberation association to become part of the Underground Railroad was formed at Knox College in 1837 .
In 1857, the Illinois Parliamentary Assembly passed a law, the Act to Incorporate the City of Galesburg , which made the town a "City".
Since 1973 Galesburg is the county seat of Knox County.
