history
When Spanish conquistadors (conquerors) came to the region of the later Gallup in 1540, Indians lived here from the Navajo and Hopi tribes, among others .
In 1880, David L. Gallup, a paymaster for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad , set up an office along the under construction transcontinental railroad where construction workers could collect their wages. In the following year, the place Gallup was created. The workers who were involved in the construction of the railway line came mainly from Europe , Asia and Mexico . Many of them stayed in the area and later worked in the coal industry .
There were some Indian riots in the town's early years, but these were put down by soldiers stationed at nearby Fort Wingate . Indian influences have remained in the city and the composition of its population to this day, and as a result of the development of tourism, they now form an aspect of Gallup's economic life.
