Gaylussacia dumosa ( English dwarf huckleberry, bush huckleberry, gopherberry ) is a species of the heather family. It is native to eastern North America and has been recorded from Newfoundland to Louisiana and Florida . It occurs along the coastal plains and in the mountains. According to the TNC , it is considered safe ("G5").
description
This shrub is branched from the ground up and grows upright to a height of 75 centimeters. The shoots come from a rhizome . The young branches are covered with curly hair. The leaves are oval, leathery and shiny. The inflorescence is a cluster of bell-shaped flowers. The fruit is a berry . The plant reproduces via seeds and the sprouting rhizomes. Sprouting begins immediately after forest fires .
ecology
The species grows in dry or moist habitat types. It can in forests, pine Heiden ( English barrens pine ), Pine savannas ( English flatwoods ), marshes and bays are encountered. It comes together with Virginian juniper ( Juniperus virginiana , English eastern red cedar ), East American larch ( Larix laricina , English tamarack ), Persea borbonia ( English redbay ), swamp magnolia ( Magnolia virginiana , English sweetbay ), dogwood ( Cornus florida , English flowering dogwood ), Gaylussacia frondosa ( English dangleberry ), Ilex vomitoria ( English yaupon ), deciduous grape heather ( Leucothoe racemosa , English fetterbush ) and blueberries ( Vaccinium spp., English blueberry ).
