Albert Geoffrey Bayldon (born January 7, 1924 in Leeds , Yorkshire , † May 10, 2017 ) was a British actor . He achieved international fame in the 1970s with the lead role in the television series Catweazle .

Life

The son of a tailor received after his military service in the Royal Air Force in the years 1947-1949 an acting training with Laurence Olivier at the Old Vic Theater School in Bristol . Bayldon had his first stage appearance in 1949 in Tough at the Top , the last musical by Charles Blake Cochran. Infected with the " Shakespeare virus" by Olivier , Bayldon excelled, for example, at the Shakespeare Memorial Theater in Stratford-upon-Avon , the Citizen's Theater in Glasgow and the Birmingham Repertory Theater , especially in Shakespeare plays. In 1956 Bayldon played Caesar in Caesar and Cleopatra at the Paris Theater . In addition to his theater work, he played in countless television series , such as Mit Schirm, Charme und Melone (The Avengers) , Simon Templar (The Saint) or Secret Order for John Drake (Danger Man) and some cinema productions . For example, he played the role of armorer Q in the James Bond parody Casino Royale (1967)  .

Bayldon became internationally known for the lead role in the 26-part youth series Catweazle , which was broadcast in 1970 and 1971 by London Weekend Television (LWT). In his role as a quirky Anglo-Saxon magician of the 11th century, he was hardly recognizable by extremely thick make-up . His ability to make funny faces was hardly affected. Catweazle was one of the few leading roles of his film and television career, otherwise he was mostly active as a busy supporting actor.

Bayldon also appeared in the supporting role of Organon in the episode The Creature from the Pit of the science fiction series Doctor Who and was also a narrator in two radio plays for Doctor Who to hear: Auld Mortality and A Storm of Angels . Bayldon appeared as a waiter in the rock film Born to Boogie in 1972, directed by ex- Beatle Ringo Starr . Bayldon also worked as a voice actor . He took his last role in 2010 in an episode of the British television series My Family .

His longtime partner until his death was the actor Alan Rowe (1926-2000). Bayldon died of a respiratory disease in May 2017 at the age of 93.
