life and career

Georg Braun was the son of a Viennese tram driver from Wehlistraße and, like many good footballers at the time, grew up near the Prater . The "Schurl", as he was called by his friends, began his career as a striker at Donaustadt before moving to the second division SV Straßenbahn in 1923 and to the Vienna AC in 1925 . There he perfected his skills and became a technically first-class runner and endurance fighter. With the Vienna AC, Braun won the Austrian Cup in 1931 and reached the cup final three times (1928, 1932 and 1935) with the black-reds.

In 1928 Braun was called up for the first time in the Austrian national team . He made his debut on May 6, 1928 in the away game against Hungary in Budapest . Georg Braun was a solid and reliable player, but he was not able to prevail against his team competitors. It took three years before Braun was allowed to play his second game for Austria on May 16, 1931 . For the international match against Scotland , the now 24-year-old Viennese was accepted by Hugo Meisl as a replacement for the sick Johann Mock in the newly formed team and this time was able to convince right away. Georg Braun played a total of 13 international matches for Austria from 1928 to 1935 and was also a participant in the 1934 World Cup . In addition, he was called up 25 times in the Viennese and Lower Austrian selection.

In the spring of 1935 he moved briefly to SC Wacker Vienna , where he only stayed until the end of the season and then worked for the French club Stade Rennes until 1939 . After his return from France he took over the post of player-coach at Linz ASK in 1939 .

During the Second World War , Braun was on the front lines and was taken prisoner by the Soviets . After his return from the Soviet Union , he worked as a coach at Linz ASK until 1952 and eventually became an Upper Austrian association coach. Afterwards he was in charge of the Ethiopian national team as team leader before he started his coaching work for the national league club SK VOEST Linz in 1956 . In the end he was in charge of the SV Micheldorf team in Upper Austria . In 1963 Georg Braun died of cancer at the age of 56 . An interesting footnote is that Braun's son was active as a footballer at Linz ASK in the top Austrian league for many years.
