Georg Demetrius von Kleist (born December 22, 1822 in Rheinfeld , † May 30, 1886 there ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Georg Demetrius came from the now extinct Rheinfeld branch of the Tychow-Dubberow line of the widespread Kleist family belonging to the Pomeranian nobility . He was the son of Georg Kaspar Otto von Kleist (born June 8, 1794 in Wendisch-Carstnitz ; † December 7, 1877 in Rheinfeld) and his wife Mathilde, née Zabockrycki (born March 28, 1802 in Kamlau; † April 9, 1868 in Rheinfeld). His father was a captain of the Landwehr and district administrator of the Karthaus district .

Military career

After attending grammar school in Danzig Kleist joined the West Prussian Cuirassier Regiment No. 5 of the Prussian Army as an officer applicant on May 9, 1840 . He became a portepee ensign in 1841 . After the officer examination, he became second lieutenant on June 9, 1841 . In 1851 he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant and in 1854 to Rittmeister . He then became squadron chief on June 30, 1859 . Several transfers followed: in 1863 to the East Prussian Cuirassier Regiment No. 3 , then in 1864 to the Rhenish Dragoon Regiment No. 5 and finally in 1865 with promotion to Major in the General Staff . During the German-Danish War of 1864 Kleist took part in the storming of the Düppeler Schanzen and the transition to Alsen . In the war against Austria in 1866 he fought near Königgrätz . In 1868 he was initially commissioned with the command of the 2nd Pomeranian Uhlan Regiment , then soon afterwards on March 22, 1868 he was appointed commander of this regiment with a simultaneous promotion to lieutenant colonel . During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, Kleist distinguished himself in the battle of Gravelotte , the siege of Metz and the siege of Verdun , and was awarded the Iron Cross II class for the battle at Château-Renault .

In 1871 he was promoted to colonel . After Kleist had been entrusted with the command of the 20th Cavalry Brigade on March 14, 1874, he was appointed commander of the brigade in Hanover on May 28, 1874 . In this position, promoted to major general on March 22, 1876 , Kleist was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and swords on the ring, on September 14, 1878 for his longstanding services . Kleist submitted his farewell, which was granted to him on May 13, 1880 with a pension and the award of the star for the Order of the Crown, 2nd class. He was then put up for disposition on May 22, 1880 , and on June 12, 1880, he was given the character of Lieutenant General.

Kleist was married to Adelheid Charlotte Ottilie Alexandrine Countess von Schlippenbach (born May 15, 1833 in Berlin, † April 7, 1916 in Rheinfeld), daughter of the Prussian Lieutenant General Ferdinand Graf von Schlippenbach , since October 24, 1856 . The marriage resulted in a son and five daughters.
