Georg Eyl

Georg Eyl (born December 17, 1821 in Halifax , † April 1, 1901 in Hameln ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Georg was a son of the commissioner in the British war commissioner Johann George Henry Eyl and his wife Karoline Luise, née Sauerwald.

Military career

Eyl attended high school in Hanover and, after graduating from high school, joined the 6th Infantry Regiment of the Hanover Army on December 25, 1838 as a cadet . By the beginning of January 1853 he was promoted to captain and at the end of May 1855 was transferred to the 3rd Infantry Regiment as a company commander . On September 20, 1858 he was transferred to the 5th Infantry Regiment while being promoted to major . In 1863/64 Eyl was with the execution troops in Holstein and received the Wilhelms-Kreuz for his work . As a lieutenant colonel , he took part in the battle of Langensalza during the war against Prussia in 1866 and was awarded the Knight's Cross II. Class of the Ernst August Order and the Langensalza Medal .

After the lost war and the annexations of the Kingdom of Hanover by Prussia, Eyl was accepted into the Association of the Prussian Army on March 9, 1867 and aggregated as a lieutenant colonel in the 3rd Brandenburg Infantry Regiment No. 20 . After his promotion to colonel , he was assigned on July 23, 1868, initially to lead the 4th Posenen Infantry Regiment No. 59 and on February 25, 1869 he was appointed regimental commander. Eyl led his regiment at the beginning of the war against France in the battle of Weißenburg and was seriously wounded by a shot through the right upper arm near Wörth . He took part in the siege of Paris as well as in the skirmish on Mont Valérien and was briefly entrusted from October 6 to November 26, 1870 with the command of the 19th Infantry Brigade . He also acted from February 9 to 25, 1871 as the leader of the 18th Infantry Brigade . Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross and the Commander of the Bavarian Order of Military Merit , Eyl was transferred to Königsberg as commander of the 1st Infantry Brigade after the peace treaty on April 13, 1872 under position à la suite of his regiment . He rose to major general on March 22, 1873 and was put up for disposition on April 13, 1875 under the award of the Order of the Red Eagle, Second Class with Oak Leaves, with a pension .

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Wörth, Kaiser Wilhelm II awarded him the crown medal, 2nd class with a star, on August 6, 1895, “In grateful memory of your services sealed by your own blood in the Battle of Wörth as commander of the 59er” . Eyl also received the character of Lieutenant General on September 10, 1898 . He died in Hameln on April 1, 1901.

Eyl married Melusine Auguste Scharf (1833–1903). The couple had several children:
