Georg Thiele (philologist)

Georg Friedrich Thiele (born January 22, 1866 in Ueckermünde , † April 6, 1917 in Greifswald ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Georg Thiele, the son of a city school principal, attended the city school in Ueckermünde and, from April 1879, the Putbus pedagogy , where he passed the school leaving examination in October 1884. He then studied Classical Philology at the University of Greifswald and at the University of Berlin (winter semester 1886/1887 to summer semester 1887). In 1889 he was in Greifswald in Adolf Kiessling Dr. phil. obtained his doctorate , then did his military service as a one-year volunteer and passed the first state examination for higher teaching qualifications in 1890.

After completing his studies, Thiele completed the seminar year at the Greifswald grammar school and the probationary year at the Stettiner Marienstifts grammar school . From November 1892 he worked as a private tutor for the Prussian ambassador Philipp zu Eulenburg in Munich and Vienna. On November 15, 1895, he switched to library service: he worked as a research assistant , and from October 1896 as a volunteer at the Royal Library in Berlin .

On August 3, 1897 , Thiele completed his habilitation at the Philipps University of Marburg for classical philology. He earned his income from college fees and publications; He received support from the faculty only for a short time (private lecturer scholarship, later extraordinary funds). On December 24, 1907, he was awarded the title of professor.

Thiele received his first permanent position with a salary on March 31, 1914. He was appointed associate professor at the University of Greifswald, where he succeeded Johannes Mewaldt . Thiele worked in Greifswald until his untimely death at the age of 51.
