Life

origin

His father was Otto Friedrich von der Betten , owner of Oerichsheil and Holenwisch . His mother was Sophia Juliane von Goeben, the second wife of the father. Georg had twelve siblings and five half-siblings. In addition, Georg grew up with his cousin Johann Friedrich because his parents could not afford a teacher for their children.

Career

In 1804 Georg joined the 1st light dragoons - (later hussars -) regiment of the King's German Legion as a flag junior . In this regiment he took part in the expeditions to Hanover in 1805 and to Copenhagen in 1807 . He fought with great personal distinction in Spain and Portugal from 1809 to 1814 , so that Beamish repeatedly mentions him as Lieutenant and Rittmeister , namely in the battle near Barouillet on September 10, 1813, where he led Portuguese on foot as a volunteer and was wounded . He received a second serious wound on February 27, 1814 at Orthez. In 1815 he fought at Waterloo . From 1816 he was a major in the Guards Hussar Regiment of the Hanover Army , rose to lieutenant colonel in January 1831 and was appointed regiment commander on February 1, 1838. As a colonel , he was given command of the 1st Cavalry Brigade at the beginning of January 1845 and in this capacity was promoted to major general at the beginning of June 1846 . When he was promoted to lieutenant general on May 5, 1851, he was appointed inspector general of the cavalry. Blankets became General of the Cavalry on May 30, 1855 and a year later a member of the Council of State.

family

Georg von der Betten had an illegitimate son named Georg Wilhelm Betten (born October 24, 1823). According to the church book in Hanover-Hainholz , the mother Marianne Samuel is a Jew from Pyrmont who worked as a maid in Hanover.

Georg married Luise Caroline Marie Friederike von Hessen-Kassel-Rumpenheim in 1833 , a daughter of Friedrich III. from Hessen-Kassel-Rumpenheim . The marriage remained childless. Her sister Auguste von Hessen was married to Adolphus Frederick, 1st Duke of Cambridge , who became Viceroy of Hanover in 1831 . The adjutant and later chief adjutant of Adolphus Frederick was Georg's cousin, Count Johann Friedrich von der Betten, for many years .

In January 1835 Georg von dercken was raised to the rank of count.

Count Georg and his wife Luise were buried in the mausoleum near the Rumpenheim Castle Church.
