George Spencer, 4th Duke of Marlborough , KG , PC , FRS (born January 26, 1739 - January 29, 1817 in Blenheim Palace near Woodstock , Oxfordshire ) was a British peer and politician.

Life

George Spencer was the elder son of Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough from his marriage to the Hon. Elizabeth Trevor, daughter of Thomas Trevor, 2nd Baron Trevor . As an apparent marriage of his father, he carried the courtesy title of Marquess of Blandford until his death . He attended Eton College and in 1755 bought an officer post as Ensign of the Coldstream Guards . In 1756 he was promoted to captain of the 20th Regiment of Foot .

At the death of his father in 1758 he inherited his title of nobility as Duke of Marlborough and became a member of the House of Lords when he came of age in 1760 . In 1761 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire and accepted into the Privy Council . In 1762 he was named Lord Chamberlain of the Household of King George III. appointed, to whom he also presented the royal scepter at the coronation in Westminster Abbey . From 1763 to 1763 he also held the office of Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal . In 1768 he was accepted as a Knight Companion in the Order of the Garter and in 1786 as a Fellow in the Royal Society .

He had set up an observatory at Blenheim Palace ; he exchanged a few things about his astronomical observations. a. with the geodesics of trigonometric surveying from Great Britain and Ireland .

Marriage and offspring

Spencer married Lady Caroline Russell , daughter of John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford , in 1762 . The marriage had eight children.
