Georgy Millyar ( Russian Георгий Францевич Милляр ; born October 25 . Jul / 7. November  1903 greg. In Moscow , Russian Empire ; † 4. June 1993 ibid, Russia ) was a Soviet and Russian theater and film actor.

Life

Milljar's father, a French bridge engineer, died when Georgi was two years old. His mother Elisabeth Schuravljow, daughter of a gold miner, moved with him to Gelendzhik . Milljar grew up alternately here and in Moscow without material hardships; he spoke three languages ​​at a young age. After the October Revolution , he first worked as an outfitter for a theater in Gelendzhik and appeared as an actor for the first time in 1920. From 1924 to 1927 Milljar studied in Moscow in the acting class of the Theater of the Revolution ( Театр Революции ; renamed Moscow Dramatic Theater in 1943 and Mayakovsky Theater in 1954 ), which was founded in 1922 by Vsevolod Meyerhold and in 1924 under the direction of Valery Bebutov ( 1885–1961) stood. From 1927 to 1938 Milljar belonged to the ensemble of this theater, which was directed by Alexei Popow (1892–1961) and later by Maxim Schtrauch . After the Great Patriotic War , from 1945 to 1952 he was a member of the Moscow Theater-Studio of Film Actors ( Театр-студия киноактёра ; renamed Theater of Film Actors in 1990 and since 1992 State Theater of Film Actors ).

Since 1929 Milljar was also active in films. His roles in the film adaptations of Russian fairy tales and sagas that emerged in the late 1930s were particularly influential. His cooperation with the director Alexander Rou was particularly fruitful. Both had already worked together in 1932 in marionettes , in which Rou was involved as an assistant director. In his first fairy tale film The Magic Fish (1938) Milljar gave the tsar and then worked in more than a dozen of his films. This is where the mime, who specializes in grotesque characters, also had his most popular roles: the legendary figure Kashchei in The Immortal Kashchai (1944/45) filmed in Kazakhstan during wartime, as well as in Fire, Water and Trumpets (1968) and above all the role of the witch Baba Jaga , the Milljar embodied the beautiful Wassilissa already in 1939 in Rous' first great success and then again in the fairy tale films Rous ( Adventure in the Magic Forest , Fire, Water and Trumpets and The Deer with the Golden Antlers ) made between 1964 and 1971 . Milljar was involved in all of Rou's fairy tale films and often played several roles per work. In addition to fairy tales and children's films , his work also includes various adventure films and historical works .

In addition to his acting activities, Milljar has been involved several times as a voice actor in animation films as well as the Russian-language versions of foreign films, including Der Hauptmann von Köpenick , Goya - or the arge path of knowledge and The long ride to school . His filmography includes over 200 works and he was in front of the camera until shortly before his death.

In 1988 he was awarded the title of People's Artist of the RSFSR ( Народный артист РСФСР ).

Milljar died around three months before his 90th birthday and was buried in the Trojekurovo cemetery in Moscow.
