The Adventures of Puss in Boots (Original title: Russian Новые похождения Кота в сапогах , Novyje pochoschdenija Kota w sapogach ) is a Soviet fairy tale film by Alexander Rou from 1958.

action

The girl Lyuba is sick in bed, although the next day she is supposed to play the princess in a school play about Puss in Boots. Her classmates visit her and rehearse the piece until Ljuba's grandfather sends her home. The neighbors appear and throw Ljuba's cat into their room, which had once again run away into their apartment. Lyuba receives her medicine and is now supposed to sleep. Next to her bed is a large chess board, the pieces of which come to life during Ljuba's sleep, as do the pieces of a card game. Lyuba dreams.

She is the princess of the chess empire and is seriously ill. Nobody seems to be able to help her, she is always sad, but the dodgy Crivello's suggestions for healing are strange: The princess should be made to cry, because the tears also leave the princess's body through the viruses. For this purpose Crivello writes horror tales, which the now gloomy fool has to read to the girl. The princess becomes more and more melancholy and so the king promises half the kingdom to the one who can heal the princess. Crivello and the lady-in-waiting Dvulice meanwhile hope for the death of the princess, as Dvulice wants to become queen of the chess empire herself.

A miller who has three sons gives each of them something, so the youngest son Wanja has a hangover. When fishing, the tomcat turns out to be a magical animal and turns into a human-like being. He overhears birds talking about the sick princess and the king's offer. The tomcat goes to the castle and is present at an audience with the princess, at which the ambassador of Prince Domino wants to cheer her up with a mechanical bird, but the bird was manipulated and destroyed by Crivello. The princess now wants a real nightingale that might cheer her up. The king goes on a nightingale hunt with Crivello. Meanwhile, Vanya has caught a nightingale and taught it to sing. Puss in Boots presents this bird to the king and tells them that it came from the Marquis de Carabas. He leaves the king and lets Vanya go naked into a lake. When the royal carriage passes by, the cat pretends that the marquis's clothes have been stolen and Crivello has to hand over his clothes to Vanya. Vanya is now invited to the royal palace as a guest. The tomcat and Vanya befriend the minister Patissonet at court, who cares about the princess. Wanja quickly realizes that the princess is not sick, but has only been made sick: Her room was darkened, the air was stuffy, she only received sweets and had to listen to Crivello's horror stories. Music was forbidden. Vanya opens the curtains and windows, the fool makes music and soon the princess is dancing around the room with Vanya and the cat. The king is delighted and Vanya is said to have half the kingdom.

To celebrate the day, the king has a masked ball held, to which Dvulice brings her aunt, the queen of spades, the evil sorceress and queen of the card kingdom. She conjures the princess into her kingdom and devastates the court of the chess king, who remains broken. The princess, in turn, is locked in a tower of the kingdom of spades by the evil sorceress. While Dvulice and Crivello are now waiting for the king to die, Vanya and Puss in Boots want to save the princess. Both reach the map realm and Puss in Boots calls on the sorceress. He uses a trick to trick her into transforming herself first into a lion and then into a mouse. The cat eats the mouse. Since the mouse carried the keys to the tower, the princess is then rescued from the tower using a magic rope. The princess, Vanya and the cat, as well as the faithful Fool and Patissonet, who have since been banished from the castle by Dvulice and Crivello, return to the castle on a donkey. The king becomes cheerful again and Crivello and Dvulice are captured. Vanya, in turn, is now allowed to marry the princess.

Lyuba awakens from the dream that made her well. She jumps out of bed and hurries to the window, where she looks into the morning sun with her cat in her arms.

The adventures of Puss in Boots mixes the fairy tales of Charles Perrault ( Puss In Boots ) and Carlo Gozzi ( The Love of the Three Oranges ). The scenario for the film comes from Sergei Michalkow .

The film was released in Soviet cinemas on May 27, 1958. On December 19, 1958, it was shown in GDR cinemas and on December 27, 1980, it ran for the first time on DFF 1 on GDR television. The nationwide television premiere was on April 1, 1994 on ORB . Icestorm released the film on DVD in 2004 as part of the series The most beautiful fairy tale classics in Russian film history .
