Gerd Leopold
Gerd Leopold (born July 23, 1958 ) is a former German medium and long-distance runner and current bobsleigh trainer . He is one of the world's best coaches in bobsleigh.
Life
Leopold was active as a medium and long-distance runner at SC Einheit Dresden . During this time he completed the marathon distance in 2:32 hours. With that he succeeded in entering himself into the eternal city ranking list of Dresden . The endurance has been described as its most outstanding feature. However, Leopold had to end his active competitive sports career early due to health problems.
In 1982 he received from the political leadership and the Ministry of State Security of the German Democratic Republic , the order in Altenberg at the newly built luge and bobsled run a second base for the Bobsleigh next Oberhof build. After the political change and the subsequent reunification , he worked alongside Raimund Bethge as a national coach . For this he left the Altenberg base and moved to Berchtesgaden . In 1993 he returned to the Ore Mountains. There he was confronted with Stasi allegations, which were, however, ended with a license . After returning to Altenberg, he married for the second time.
Leopold Harald Czudaj trained in Altenberg . This was achieved in the 1994 Winter Olympics in Norway Lillehammer together with Karsten Brannasch , Olaf Hampel , Alexander Szelig the Olympic gold medal in four-man. In February 1996 he founded the "Olympia" sports and leisure center in Riesa together with Czudaj and in 2003 a counterpart in Coswig .
After the end of his work as national coach, Leopold first took over the office of national coach of Jamaica , later he worked for the French and Dutch associations. At the same time as these engagements, he was active as a city councilor in Riesa . He gave up this mandate when the Bobsleigh and Sled Association for Germany signed him again in 2007. Leopold became a federal base trainer in Altenberg and was temporarily responsible for the next generation. There he trained a. a. Matthias Höpfner , Thomas Florschütz , the multiple world and Olympic champion of 2018 , Francesco Friedrich and Nico Walther . After Friedrich's Olympic victory in 2018, Leopold was given the honor of being able to enter himself in the city of Riesa's Golden Book . He also announced that he would like to continue his coaching career until the 2022 Winter Olympics . On January 12, 2019, he was named Trainer of the Year 2018 at the Saxon Sports Gala.
Leopold is married and has four children.
