Gerd Wartenberg

Gerd Wartenberg (born June 26, 1944 in Swinoujscie ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and political official .

Life

After graduating from high school in Hamburg , Wartenberg did an apprenticeship as a typesetter and then studied economics . Since 1972 he has worked as a specialist editor in the fields of architecture , urban planning and housing . Until 1980 he was editor of the weekly newspaper Bauwelt .

Gerd Wartenberg was a member of the Falken from 1955 to 1965 before joining the SPD in 1967 . From 1975 he was a member of the state executive of the Berlin SPD and a member of the party council and from 1985 to 1989 chairman of the SPD Berlin-Kreuzberg .

From 1975 to 1980 he was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives and from 1979 to 1980 deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. From November 4, 1980 to November 10, 1994 he was a member of the German Bundestag . After he was elected to the Bundestag by the Berlin House of Representatives in 1980 , 1983 and 1987 and, like all Berlin Bundestag members, only had limited voting rights there, he was able to stand for the first time as a candidate to be elected by the electorate in the first all-German Bundestag election in 1990 State list of the Berlin SPD elected.

After the " grand coalition " of the CDU and SPD continued as a result of the election to the Berlin House of Representatives in 1995 , Wartenberg took over the office of State Secretary for Federal and European Affairs in the Senate Chancellery of Berlin on February 6, 1996 .

After the parliamentary elections in 1999, he also held a position as State Secretary in the Senate Chancellery, this time as the representative of the State of Berlin at the federal level and, from 2001, also as European Commissioner. On February 15, 2002, Wartenberg was finally put into temporary retirement. His successor as federal agent and European commissioner was Monika Helbig (SPD).

Wartenberg was most recently chairman of the Berlin regional association of the European Union and is now an honorary member of the board of the Humanism Foundation Berlin.
