Gerhard Ortner

Gerhard Ortner (born August 27, 1933 in Scharten ) is an Austrian bank manager and was General Director of Volksbank Salzburg from 1983 to 1998 , Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Österreichische Volksbanken-Aktiengesellschaft (ÖVAG) from 1991 to 2002 and President of the Austrian Cooperative Association from 1986 to 2001 (ÖGV).

Life and education

Gerhard Ortner was born as the tenth child of Johann Ortner (1888–1961), a haulier, and his wife Anna (née Huemer; 1889–1947) in Scharten near Wels and attended the grammar school in Wels as well as the college after primary school in Scharten Petrinum in Linz , where he graduated from high school in 1953 . He then attended the University of World Trade in Vienna , where he graduated in 1957 with a degree in business administration. During this time he also came into contact with the Vienna-based KÖStV Kürnberg , which was founded in 1900 , a color-bearing and non-striking student association and member of the Austrian Cartel Association (ÖCV), of which he became a member on October 20, 1953 and was given the couleur name Bulle . In the winter semester 1955/56 he was a senior in the student union.

Professional activity after graduation

He initially worked in industry, in 1957 moved to the Lower Austrian Chamber of Agriculture , Revision Department , and was entrusted with the supervision and inspection of rural credit unions in Lower Austria . In 1958 he joined the central bank of Austria's Volksbanks as a credit auditor .

Professional activity at Volksbank Salzburg

In 1961 he joined Volksbank Salzburg and headed the credit department until he was appointed head of the credit institute and was elected to the board in June 1963.

In 1975 he became chairman of the board of the Volksbank Salzburg and on August 25, 1983 the honorary chairman of the board, attorney Hans Asamer, appointed him general director .

During his time at the head of the credit institute, the company expanded into a regional bank with 32 branches in the city ​​of Salzburg and in the province of Salzburg with around 300 employees. Volksbank Salzburg was joined by Volksbanks Saalfelden and Seekirchen during this period , making it the largest commercial credit cooperative in Austria at the time.

In Germany, new trends were set with the establishment of Volksbank Wien AG and the acquisition of Niederösterreichische Landes-Hypothekenbank.
