Live and act
Gerhard Trabert was born in Mainz in 1956 . During his childhood he spent a lot of time in the orphanage where his father worked as an educator. This made him aware of the fate of disadvantaged people early on. Trabert studied social work at the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences from 1975 to 1979 (graduation: Diplom-Sozialpädagoge). Before and during his studies he was part of the athletics team of the German junior and student national team. His sporting successes include the silver medal in the 4 x 400 meter run at the European Junior Athletics Championships in 1975 and the bronze medal in the 4 x 400 meter run at the Universiade 1977. His best time at 800 m, which Trabert set up in 1981 is still represented in the list of the "Eternal Top Ten" of the USC Mainz today . After completing his studies, Trabert worked in the hospital social service. In 1983 he began studying human medicine , which he completed in 1989 at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . During his studies Trabert received a scholarship from the Evangelisches Studienwerk Villigst . With his dissertation “Health situation and medical care for homeless people”, Trabert was awarded a doctorate by the medical faculty of the University of Mainz after completing his studies. med. PhD. Trabert worked clinically for 10 years at hospitals in Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse . His focus was internal medicine , especially the medical and psychosocial care of oncological patients. He completed further training as a general practitioner and emergency medicine doctor . From the start of his medical practice, he completed numerous assignments abroad, including in India , Bangladesh and the USA .
During his trip through India Trabert got to know the “outreach health care concept” medical street work , in which mainly leprosy patients were treated. The guiding principle followed by this concept is: "If the patient does not come to the doctor, the doctor comes to the patient". Inspired by this work and his experience there, he applied this medical approach to health care for homeless people. In 1994 he founded the Mainz model, a medical care facility for homeless people. Trabert and his colleagues use a “doctor's mobile” to visit certain locations and offer medical help free of charge. Trabert was the first doctor in Germany to receive statutory health insurance approval for this form of mobile practice .
He is the author of numerous articles on the subject of poverty and health, child poverty, poverty and suicidality, children of parents with cancer. Trabert is also the author of children's books on cancer. In 1998 he founded the Association for Poverty and Health in Germany , a member of the National Poverty Conference . From 1999 to 2009 he held a professorship for medicine and social medicine at the Georg-Simon-Ohm University in Nuremberg , and since 2009 a professorship for social medicine and social psychiatry in the social affairs department of the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences .
In 2013 Trabert set up the "Ambulance without borders" on the premises of the city of Mainz. 20 doctors, nurses and social workers work in the outpatient department. Homeless people and patients without insurance coverage are given free medical treatment.
