Gert Monheim

Gert Monheim (born December 2, 1944 in Sankt Vith ) is a German documentary filmmaker and journalist .

Life

After studying history, political science and German at the University of Cologne , Gert Monheim began working for WDR as a television reporter in 1971 . He worked for five years as a reporter , moderator and editor in the current field, but soon dealt with longer-term socio-political issues. In 1976 he took over the management of media education at WDR school television for three years. In 1980/81 he was director of the media-critical ARD broadcast Glashaus. Since 1982 he has realized and produced television documentaries, features and reports in the Inland program group of Westdeutscher Rundfunk . He worked in particular for the series Gesucht is ... , a well-known and award-winning investigative documentary series that Westdeutscher Rundfunk brought to ARD. From 1996 to the end of 1999 he was the editor in charge of the series “ Menschen closely” . To this day, this series of programs portrays people whose development is exciting and whose lives are touching. In 2000 he founded the series die story , which produces political documentaries from Germany and abroad for WDR television and ARD . This series of broadcasts aims to illustrate relevant social developments by means of specific stories. Right from the start, the editorial team attached great importance to investigative research and a clear narrative style. In 2004, Gert Monheim resigned from the editorial office and fully concentrated on his work as an author and director .

In 2009 Gert Monheim left the WDR at the age of 65 and increasingly turned to his work as a lecturer at film and media academies. He teaches regularly at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy in Ludwigsburg and at the International Film School Cologne (research for television documentaries, conversation and interview techniques, analysis of exposés for documentary formats) and at the ARD-ZDF media academy (including critical contributions - professional research and legal protection together with Stephan Michelfelder, deputy legal advisor of the WDR.)

Since June 2009 Gert Monheim has been a board member of the journalists' organization Netzwerk Recherche . He was also a member of the WDR's arbitration committee for many years .

He received many awards for his documentaries and reports. In 2010 he was awarded the special prize of the Hanns Joachim Friedrichs Prize for the editorial team of the WDR documentary series die story . He received three Grimme Awards; u. a. for "Looking for ... a cause of death (1986) and" Looking for ... poison in the workplace (1988). He was awarded a Grimme Prize in 2004 for developing the series Die Story . In 2007 he received the German Television Award for the best reportage. In addition, he received the Civis Media Prize twice a . a. for a documentation about the riots in Rostock-Lichtenhagen against refugees. He received Ökomedia awards for “We are looking for ... poison in the workplace” and for “wood preservative manufacturers in the dock”.

Gert Monheim has been married to Rosmarie Monheim since 1971, with whom he has two sons. He lives in Rösrath .
