history

Old building on Kirchstrasse

School operations started in August 1905 in the now listed building. The building was planned by the city architects Rudolf Thoma and Matthias Stammnitz. It is a building in the style of late historicism that combined the elements of Gothic and Renaissance . The gray-yellow sandstone building based on the model of the Aschaffenburg Johannisburg Palace was built between 1902 and 1905. The many sculptures and mosaic paintings by Julius Seitz , his students August Müssle , Theodor Hengst , Ferdinand Kohl and Louis Granget as well as by Friedrich Meinecke are striking . These show images of most of the craft trades. A large number of Freiburg craft businesses participated in the construction. Above two windows on the left side wing there is a relief portrait of the cathedral builder Hans Böringer , which was created by August Müssle. The Baden coat of arms on the gable comes from Julius Seitz, as does the figures of master and craftsman from the Renaissance period on the main gable of the central building. Seitz created a portrait of Stammnitz as a bay console.

At the inauguration, the classrooms and workshops were state of the art. At the beginning of the First World War the school was the mobilization barracks and in the years after the Second World War from 1945 to 1955 the seat of the French army command. From 1926 to 1935, the technical systems of the first Freiburg radio station were also housed here. The successor is today the transmitter Freiburg-Lehen in the district Lehen .

In the 1980s, a general renovation was necessary because both the use as a school and the wars had left their mark. It was possible to declare the school a “ cultural monument of special importance” and thus to prevent its demolition: the damage was repaired over several years. In this context, in 1987 the name was also changed to “Gertrud-Luckner-Gewerbeschule” after Gertrud Luckner, who was made an honorary citizen of Freiburg in 1979 . The renovations continue to this day; for example, the interior was redesigned from 1996 to 2003.

In the 1980s, the new building in Bissierstrasse was added, which today also houses the administration and the directorate.
