Gierszowice ( German Giersdorf ) is a village in the Polish rural community Olszanka ( Alzenau ) in the powiat Brzeski of the Opole Voivodeship .

Geographical location

Gierszowice is located in the eastern part of Lower Silesia in the Brieger Land. The village of Gierszowice is located about three kilometers northeast of the municipality seat Olszanka , about seven kilometers southeast of the district town Brzeg and about 38 kilometers northwest of the voivodeship capital Opole .

Gierszowice is located in the Nizina Śląska (Silesian Plain) within the Równina Wrocławska (Wroclaw Plain) . The Bytom – Wrocław railway runs east of the village and the Nysa – Brzeg railway line runs west .

Neighboring towns of Gierszowice are in the north of the county seat Brzeg ( Brieg ) to the east Strzelniki ( Jägerndorf ), in the south Pogorzela ( Pogarell ) and the parish seat Olszanka ( Alzenau ) and to the west Krzyżowice (Kreisewitz) .

Church of the Holy Virgin

The place is first mentioned in 1375 as Gerhartsdorf . 1402 was mentioned as Gerensdorff, 1403 as Gerisdorff. The place name is derived from the name of the founder, Dorf des Gerhards .

After the First Silesian War in 1742, Giersdorf and most of Silesia fell to Prussia .

After the reorganization of the province of Silesia , the rural community of Giersdorf belonged to the district of Brieg in the administrative district of Breslau from 1818 . In 1845 there was a Protestant church and another 66 houses in the village. In the same year 401 people lived in Giersdorf, three of them Catholic. In 1874 the district of Alzenau was founded, to which Giersdorf was incorporated. In 1885 553 people lived in Giersdorf.

In 1933 there were 464 people in Giersdorf, and again 416 in 1939. Until 1945 the village belonged to the district of Brieg .

As a result of the Second World War, Giersdorf fell under Polish administration in 1945, like most of Silesia . Subsequently, the place was renamed Gierszowice and joined the Silesian Voivodeship. In 1950 it was incorporated into the Opole Voivodeship. In 1999 the place became part of the newly founded Powiat Breszki ( Brieg district )

Attractions

  • The Roman Catholic Church of the Blessed Virgin (Polish Kościół Matki Boskiej ) originally served as Michael’s Church as a church for the Protestant community until 1945. The church was built around 1300 in the Gothic style. The tower was added in the 16th century. From 1534 the church served as a Protestant church. The church is surrounded by a Gothic stone wall that dates back to the 15th century. The main altar inside dates from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. The church has been a listed building since 1964.
