Jankowice Wielkie ( German Groß Jenkwitz ) is a village in the Polish rural community Olszanka ( Alzenau ) in the Brzeski powiat of the Opole Voivodeship .

Geographical location

Jankowice Wielkie is located in the eastern part of Lower Silesia in the Brieger Land. The village of Jankowice Wielkie is located about five kilometers southwest of the municipality seat Olszanka , about 13 kilometers south of the district town of Brzeg and about 41 kilometers northwest of the voivodeship capital Opole .

Jankowice Wielkie is located in the Nizina Śląska (Silesian Plain) within the Równina Wrocławska (Wroclaw Plain) . The Nysa – Brzeg railway runs east of the village and the A4 motorway runs south .

The place is first mentioned in 1300 as Villa Jancowitz . In 1334 and 1358 the village was mentioned as Jenkowicz . The place name is derived from the name of the founder, Johann village .

After the First Silesian War in 1742, Groß Jenkwitz and most of Silesia fell to Prussia .

After the reorganization of the province of Silesia , the rural community of Groß Jenkwitz belonged to the district of Brieg in the administrative district of Breslau from 1818 . In 1845 there was a Protestant church, a Protestant school, a castle, an outworks, a brewery, a distillery and another 79 houses in the village. In the same year, 494 people lived in Groß Jenkwitz, 31 of them Catholic. In 1874 the district of Groß Jenkwitz was founded. The first head of office was the landowner Erber. In 1885, 462 people lived in Groß Jenkwitz.

In 1933 there were 521 people in Groß Jenkwitz, and in 1939 there were 505 people. Until 1945 the village belonged to the district of Brieg .

As a result of the Second World War, Groß Jenkwitz fell under Polish administration in 1945, like most of Silesia . The place was subsequently renamed Jankowice Wielkie and joined the Silesian Voivodeship. In 1950 it was incorporated into the Opole Voivodeship. In 1999 the place came to the newly founded Powiat Brzeski ( Brieg district ).

Attractions

  • The Church of St. Mary (Polish Kościół Najświętszej Marii Panny ) dates from the 14th century. The first written mention comes from the year 1483. In 1535 the church was handed over to the Protestant community, which used the church until 1945. The church was built in the Gothic style and has a bell tower on the west side. The baroque altar inside dates from the 17th century. The church has been a listed building since 1965.
  • The Castle United Jenkwitz is located east of the church of St. Mary in the village center. The building was built at the beginning of the 19th century in the classicism style by order of the Mache family. The building has a rectangular floor plan with two floors and a hipped roof. On the street side there is a portico with double pilasters and a triangular pediment in the middle of the facade. The building has also been a listed building since 1965.
