Giovanni Paolo Gibertini OSB (* 4. May 1922 in Ciano d'Enza as Giovanni Gibertini ; † 3. April 2020 in Montecchio ) was an Italian religious cleric , Benedictine abbot and Roman Catholic Bishop of Reggio Emilia-Guastalla .

Life

Giovanni Paolo Gibertini entered the novitiate of the Benedictine Abbey of San Giovanni Evangelista in Parma in 1935 , made his profession on October 7, 1939 and, after studying theology, was ordained a priest on August 12, 1945 in the Torrechiara Abbey by Evasio Colli , Bishop of Parma. From 1947 to 1955 he was prefect of the small seminary of the Benedictine monastery in Parma. In 1955 he founded the monastery of San Pietro di Sorres in the Archdiocese of Sassari in Sardinia with six other friars . He spent a year in the Bismantova hermitage and returned to the monastery in 1974. He was also pastor of the Borutta parish from 1977 to 1979 . In 1979 he was elected abbot of his professed monastery, the Abbey of San Giovanni Evangelista in Parma.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Ales-Terralba on March 23, 1983 . The Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, Sebastiano Baggio , consecrated him as a bishop on April 30 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Francesco Spanedda , Archbishop of Oristano , and Benito Cocchi , Bishop of Parma-Fontevivo . His episcopal motto was "Quarere Deum" ("Seeking God" according to the Regula Benedicti ). On July 11, 1989, he was appointed Bishop of Reggio Emilia-Guastalla.

On June 27, 1998, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. From September 1998 Gibertini lived in the Benedictine monastery in Parma before moving to the San Giuseppe dormitory in Montecchio in 2012 . He died there in 2020 a month before his 98th birthday.
