concept

Single image from "Glossary of Broken Dreams" from the animated film sequence "The Media".

Johannes Grenzfurthner, who literally describes himself in the film as a ' lump nerd ', acts as a narrative bracket. He acts as a storyteller who moderates and comments on the different parts of the film. The film does not make use of the classic aesthetics and methodology of documentary film. Glossary of Broken Dreams shows no archive material and does not use interviews. Rather, the film presents the political and philosophical concepts in the form of acted, humorous-bizarre sequences with exaggerated fictional characters. These are played by actors, performers and musicians (e.g. . Amber Benson , Max Grodénchik , Stefanie nail in the coffin , Robert Stachel , Duscher & Gratzer so). the film can be seen in the tradition of reflexive and performative documentaries are.

Grenzfurthner says about his motivation to make the film:

I found that something like a political spring cleaning of the terms was necessary. Because only if we really take the broom in hand and dare to dispose of things do we all prevent left-wing liberal hoarders. As an example, I'll take the concept of privacy , which everyone smiles at like a baby dog. So much can be revealed: As a good old new leftist, I have a problem with the very conservative and deeply bourgeois rat tail that the privacy debate carries around with it. I think it is time to exchange thought templates here. The question is not: "How can we defend privacy the hell out of it?" But: "Why is privacy so important to us?" Can it not be that we are more interested in reformist combating symptoms than in solving the underlying problems?

chapter

Prologue

Grenzfurthner introduces himself as a moderator and defines people as narrative and political beings. There is a demand for a clarification of terms and concepts in political discourse. Which are still useful?

An introduction to the basic rule system of the capitalist world order and an overview of its historical development.

An analysis of the positive and negative characteristics of based on competitive systems (such as capitalism and biological evolution ) with regard to the resolution of current relations of exploitation.

Accumulation (Accumulation)
With Johannes Grenzfurthner (as Doctor Ullmaier) and Alexander E. Fennon (as a bank clerk)
This section explains capital accumulation in an ironic demonstration in which 50 euros are wasted through a currency exchange process.

Resistance / Activism (resistance / activism)
By John Grenzfurthner (as a woman mud Peitz Inger) and Robert Stachel (as a waiter Walter Peckinpah)
A story of the transformation of Western societies of disciplinary societies in societies of control and as positive subversion in art, politics and activism more difficult.

The Media (Die Medien)
With Amber Benson (as Pfefferkarree McCormick), Michael J. Epstein (as DeForest Schbeibi) and Katharina Stemberger and Stefanie Sargnagel (as debaters)

Privacy / Data (Privacy / data)
with Ahmed Abdel-Salam (as Modern subjects) and Jim Libby (as information gauze)
This section provides a historical overview of the concept of privacy and its emergence as part of the bourgeois economy . Criticism has been expressed that the currently prevailing data protection movement does not address the more fundamental problems facing society. The idea is introduced for the first time in the film (continued in "The Left") that information and computerization can only be used in an emancipatory and socially liberating way if the current definition of private property changes.

Nature Vs Nurture (plant versus environment)

A criticism of current left-wing activities with the main question why the left cannot break away from tactics of the 20th century. The campaigns, which are often emotionalizing and affect-oriented, cannot initiate any necessary course corrections. Particularly in view of the massive changes in the field of information technology and the changing production methods of goods, the demand for new commons , a new digital commons , is made.

Epilogue
With Johannes Grenzfurthner (as director) and Gerald Votava (as producer).
The end of the film is a self-ironic examination of the production conditions of the film.

criticism

"This" glossary of unfulfilled dreams "is a film essay about failed hopes, about the unfulfilled promises of happiness and freedom in recent human history - from the Enlightenment and liberalism to capitalism and communism to art, activism and punk."

- Hannoversche Zeitung

“Produced on a small budget as a monumental puzzle, [Grenzfurthner] takes its audience with it through an encyclopedia of worn, misunderstood and corrupted terms and ideas. This becomes explosive due to the fact that it is precisely the favorite vocabulary of current discourses, the golden calves of contemporary debates on politics and society. Grenzfurthner takes you to the slaughter with relish, to rummage in your bowels and read an uncertain future from it. "

- zebra butter

“It's about having fun. As in the film "Glossary of Broken Dreams", the latest bravura piece from the monochrom workshop. [...] The opus that gets to the bottom of big buzzwords - "capitalism", "justice", "politics", "freedom", "global warming" or "privacy" - is great, full of bizarre scenes and meaningless nonsense .
