GOG.com (formerly Good Old Games ) is a multilingual distribution platform for computer games and films on the Internet, so it follows the distribution model of digital distribution. GOG.com was started in 2008 by the Polish company CD Projekt and is operated by GOG sp. z oo , a sister company of CD Projekt, based in Warsaw .

concept

GOG.com mainly offers better-known, older PC games that are mostly no longer available in retail stores and can therefore be seen as part of the retrogaming phenomenon . All games are offered exclusively as a download , patched to the latest version and adapted for the platforms Windows XP , Windows Vista , Windows 7 , Windows 8 as well as Mac OS (since October 18, 2012) and Linux (since August 19, 2014) . For the newly recruited from February 2011 Games which will be compatible to Windows 7 guarantees in previously available games this is only partially given. Since the release of Windows 8, most newly recorded games have been adapted for this system as well. The business idea behind GOG.com is that with the possibility of inexpensive distribution and provision of software via digital distribution , the commercial distribution of "exotic" software, such as computer games which are now abandonware , will again make economic sense.

In contrast to other online sales platforms - such as B. Steam  - GOG.com has committed itself to the philosophy of offering all games on offer DRM- free in order to offer customers maximum freedom in the use of the purchased product. Customers should not be bogged down by Internet pressure or the need for special download managers or clients . Since GOG.com relies on standard browser technology and does not require a specific client, hidden impairments to consumer and data protection through information spying and dissemination - as is possible with other providers - are excluded.

Additional bonus material such as soundtracks (some in lossless FLAC format), manuals as PDF, desktop backgrounds and development interviews are generally offered for games. User support is also part of the overall package. Most of the offerings are in English, but are being expanded to include versions of games that are sold internationally in several languages. Specially localized versions are not offered.

In order to receive a game, a free registration is required, which is also valid for the Internet forum. All games purchased are available to the customer as a download at any time, even if the games are withdrawn from distribution. A 30-day right of return is offered, but no resale option, such as B. at Green Man Gaming . GOG.com now also offers games as (non-personalized) license keys ( Redeem Code ), which can be passed on at will (e.g. as a gift) and only later permanently assigned to a GOG.com account. Payment is possible by VISA , Mastercard , Paysafecard , PayPal , instant transfer and some other digital payment service providers.

technology

In order to get games that were developed for decades-old hardware and software platforms to work on modern PC systems, GOG.com pursues several approaches. Where available and possible, compatibility adjustments are made in the source code or in the installation scripts, e.g. B. Divine Divinity . Where not available or too expensive, emulators such as the MS-DOS emulator DOSBox or the Scumm emulator ScummVM are used. The side effect of application virtualization with emulators also enables games to be used under other operating systems (e.g. Linux), since emulators are often developed platform-independent . Sometimes necessary game patches come from the player community itself, so-called fan or community patches , so games like Planescape: Torment or Arcanum: From Steam Engines and Magic are only raised to a technically playable level through these.

history

In 2008, GOG.com was first introduced under the name Good Old Games and began to offer games as part of a beta phase that were mainly released between 1995 and 2000, i.e. at the end of DOS - and at the beginning of the Windows era. A simple pricing scheme with three standard price categories was introduced: In addition to the six free games, downloads were offered for either USD 5.99 or USD 9.99, whereby in some cases older titles from a game series were also bundled in a download package. Exceptions to this pricing were promotions that offered a discount on games on a specific topic or a specific publisher for a limited period of time. These promotions still take place almost every week today and are usually for a weekend.

Controversial promotion 2010

At the end of the beta phase in September 2010, the page was closed and an ambiguous message was posted, stating that the offer “in its current form” could no longer exist. This turned out to be a marketing campaign that was controversially discussed on the Internet, initially through messages from the site maintainer and later also through the continued operation of the site.

Relaunch after beta

On September 23, 2010 the website was launched with a new design and the beta phase ended. During the introductory presentation, GOG's co-founder Marcin Iwinski and director Guillaume Rambourg dressed up as monks to atone for their sins in the controversial 2010 advertising campaign.

More than 5.8 million games have been downloaded since 2008, not counting new downloads. Customers in the United States made more than 50% of sales . In 2011 there were over 300 games in the range, on January 17, 2013 the 500th game was added to the catalog. The offer is usually extended by one or two titles on Tuesdays, sometimes also on Thursdays.

Full price games

In 2011 the game The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings was offered at full price - but also without DRM - as an attempt to expand the concept . This game was developed by CD Projekt Red's own development department . The experiment was successful, on the one hand 40,000 units were sold by March, on the other hand the percentage of the DRM-free GOG version in the pirated copies of the game was only small. That is why it was announced at the end of 2011 that more newer games ( early Windows era ) and first-time games (like The Witcher 2 ) would be offered in the future.

SOPA boycott

In January 2012, the GOG, which by its own account remains politically neutral, spoke out against the controversial draft laws SOPA and PIPA in the United States and called on readers to object to politicians, as they are ineffective against copyright infringements and restrict the freedom of the Internet, which would result GOG.com could also be affected. SOPA is similar to digital rights management. Complete solutions and Let's Plays would be illegalized and only honest customers would be restricted, while pirates could de facto continue to gain illegal access to protected material via peer-to-peer networks and one-click hosters .

Expansion of the business area in 2012

After the announcement that the Good Old Games range would be expanded to include current products in the future, the changeover took place in March 2012. With Trine , The Whispered World and Legend of Grimrock , the first more recent games from other companies have been added to the range. Since the portal's original name (Good Old Games) became obsolete as a result of the expansion of the business area, the company has since operated exclusively under the name of the website URL as GOG.com. With the sale of 17,000 units of Legend of Grimrock within one month, the model of sales was also classified as successful for new game titles from third parties and the introduction of further titles by independent development studios was announced. In October 2012, GOG.com began to support macOS as a second platform, starting with a range of 50 titles, which has since been gradually expanded.

System Shock 2

On February 13, 2013, it was announced that after years of research, GOG.com had succeeded in getting a title, System Shock 2 , which was believed to never be published again due to particularly complicated licensing relationships , from the abandonware state . System Shock 2 was made available in an edited version on February 14, 2013 on GOG.com in German and English.

refund policy

On December 9, 2013, GOG.com introduced a right of return with a refund of the purchase price in the event of technical problems within 30 days or if a purchased game has not yet been downloaded.

2014

In March 2014, Gog.com announced that it would also support Linux as a platform in the future. It was announced that it would initially serve Ubuntu and Mint . At the targeted start in autumn 2014, at least 100 titles should be available for the platform and run there natively. This should include current games that were already available for purchase on GOG.com and include official Linux support from the manufacturer, as well as new titles that appear on GOG.com for the first time.

In July 2014, the official side announced the immediate support of the distributions Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and Mint 17 for 50 games. The games are offered both as a Debian package and as (platform-independent) compressed tarball archive files. GOG.com wanted to keep offering at least 100 games for Linux through the fall. The reason given for the early start was that there was no point in delaying support just to be able to present the public with a nice-looking number. With the beginning of the support of the platform, one of the most frequently requested functions on the Community Wishlist was set to "completed". The goal of 100 games supported was achieved in October 2014.

In August 2014, GOG.com presented a new design in which game prices could be displayed in local currencies or optionally in US dollars. Price differences for titles for which a regional price was stipulated were offset by so-called store credit , which was a credit for future purchases on the sales platform. The introduction of local prices had already been carried out for several new titles. In addition, several new payment methods were introduced with the design revision.

As part of the changeover, GOG began offering DRM-free film files for downloading or streaming, although according to a news report from the retailer, a uniform price was initially being sought for most titles. In the starting line-up of 21 documentaries , most of which are about computer games, the two films TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard and The Art of Playing are offered free of charge. The resolution of the films is 1080p (1920 × 1080 pixels) or 720p (1280 × 720 pixels), with an additional 576p download available, which is primarily intended for customers with limited Internet bandwidth or volume tariffs.

The Swedish publisher Nordic Games withdrew at the same time from the distribution cooperation with CD Projekt, which is why its titles were removed from the online retailer's portfolio at the beginning of September 2014. The reason given was the modified GOG.com model (“Fair Price Package”) with regard to regional prices by the publisher. Nordic Games returned to GOG.com in May 2015.

In September 2014, GOG.com began offering Amiga games from the Cinemaware catalog, with Defender of the Crown as the first title. Technically, this is done by bundling with Cinemaware's own Amiga emulator , called Rocklobster .

As part of a CD project release in June 2014, it was announced that GOG.com would receive a Steam- like client software called GOG Galaxy for Windows, Mac and Linux. The client should contain sales page, software distribution and social network functionality, but remain committed to the principle of freedom from DRM. In October 2014, an open beta phase of the multiplayer part of the GOG Galaxy clients began, accompanied by the freely available game Aliens versus Predator (1999 version). In July 2015, the GOG Galaxy beta client received positive reviews from PC Gamer ; In particular, the focus on the user was emphasized in comparison with the client from another provider. A release of the client for Linux is still pending despite the announcement (as of February 2019).

In October 2014, GOG.com succeeded in gaining another major publisher , Disney, as a DRM-free partner. With this new partnership, GOG.com began releasing some of the most requested game titles such as: B. from the LucasArts catalog or the Star Wars universe. Over 20 titles have been announced; It started with six games, including Star Wars: X-Wing , Sam & Max Hit the Road and The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition .

In addition, through an agreement with Disney in October 2017, GOG.com succeeded in reactivating the multiplayer servers for Star Wars: Battlefront 2 and Star Wars: Empire at War , which enable cross-platform play on Steam .

German publication / regional restriction of the offer

On February 26, 2015, GOG.com launched a German-language website, shortly after the introduction of a French presence. Apart from the localization of the website, German-speaking customers were offered games produced in Germany as well as their own forum and German-speaking customer service.

This change was accompanied by another innovation: three games were blocked for German customers with the help of geolocks and region locks for buyers from Germany. This happened in contrast to the implementation at the competitor Steam, which provides region locks for all games without legal necessity, only to meet the legal requirements and to forestall a lawsuit.

The affected games are the first three parts of the Commandos series: Commandos: Behind enemy lines and Commandos 2: Men of Courage and Commandos 3: Destination Berlin (the latter two are offered as a game package). Against the original version of the first part was issued in Germany on 24 June 1999, a seizure warrant from the District Court of Kassel (Docket 32Js32822.9 / 98-201Gs). It is therefore subject to a distribution ban in Germany .

In June 2016, the platform blocked 31 computer games from German IP addresses. Many of these games are either on the index of the federal inspection agency for media harmful to minors or have problems with the adapted German version. The portal did not give a reason for blocking and players who had previously bought a title that has now been blocked can still play it.

Bethesda Softworks

On August 26, 2015, Bethesda Softworks joined GOG.com with some classic PC titles: id Software's Doom and Quake , Fallout (again), and classic Elder Scrolls titles became available. This came to the surprise of observers, as Bethesda had shown no move towards GOG.com since the 2014 Fallout title was removed. At the same time, at the request of Bethesda Softworks, GOG.com blocked the distribution of some of these games for German IP addresses. That was before the general indexed title ban in June 2016.

Development from 2018

According to the company, GOG.com began restructuring the company in October 2018 with the aim of increasing profitability. As part of these measures, 10% of the workforce was laid off in February 2019.

GOG Galaxy 2.0

After the GOG Galaxy client left the beta phase in 2017, important functions were added to it. These include, for example, saving games in the cloud , offering an installation program, discount campaigns and free games, revised options in the user profile settings, friend management , feed design and communication options, and the introduction of the company's own payment system, GOG Wallet .

At the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2019, GOG.com announced that they want to optimize their client so that games from other stores can also be managed there. The stores supported are supposed to be Steam , Origin and the Epic Games Store , among others , but some of them require external plugins. The client of the other stores must still be installed. Even PlayStation 4 games are can be managed. Xbox One and Nintendo Switch games should also be supported in the future.

Central game management should make it easier to manage games that are otherwise only available in a store and whose clients are required. The management of the games should also include the overview of achievements in the games. Communication between users of other stores and their profile view should also be possible.

Reception and market share

In an article from November 11, 2011, the computer game magazine PC Gamer published statistics of the digital sales of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings via various distribution channels, including a. GOG.com. According to PC Gamer, the game was sold 10,000 times (4%) through Direct2Drive, Impulse and Gamersgate, GOG sold 40,000 copies (16%), while Steam sold 200,000 copies (80%) over the same period. It should be noted that GOG.com is owned by the game maker and these statistics are therefore not generally representative of the other games available on GOG.com.

In February 2013, the developer of Defenders Quest announced the proceeds after three months of sales and distribution through multiple digital distribution solutions and direct sales. According to the published figures, GOG.com was the second most important digital distributor after competitor Steam.

By June 9, 2015, GOG.com succeeded in selling the game " The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt ", with 690,000 units sold, significantly more than the largest distributor Steam (approx. 580,000 units) and all other digital distributors combined. Here, too, it should be noted that GOG.com is owned by the manufacturer of the game and therefore these statistics are not generally representative of the other games available on GOG.com.

GOG.com currently (as of 2020) has over 3,700 DRM-free products in its portfolio from more than 600 providers.
