Gov't Mule (pronounced "Government Mule") is an American rock band formed in 1994 by guitarist and singer Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody (both members of the Allman Brothers Band ) and drummer Matt Abts (formerly with Dickey Betts, among others Band ) was founded.

Band history

Gov't Mule - Leverkusener Jazztage 2017

The debut album, titled after the band, was released a year after Gov't Mule was founded and reached number 5 on US blues albums. The next two studio albums Dose (1998) and Life Before Insanity (2000) and the band's live albums could not build on that. When Allen Woody died on August 26th, 2000, the band continued, but the position of bassist was not filled for the time being. Guest musicians like Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers , Michael Gordon from Phish and Bootsy Collins stepped in . The chart breakthrough came from 2001 to 2003 with the album series The Deep End Volume 1 & 2 and the accompanying live CD / DVD. All three albums made it onto the official album charts .

Then Andy Hess, who had previously played with the Black Crowes , officially became the new bass player. Danny Louis was also added as a keyboardist, which expanded the trio into a quartet. The following two studio albums Déjà Voodoo (2004) and High & Mighty (2006) were recorded with this line-up and both made the top 100 of the album charts. There was also the benefit concert series by Warren Haynes with the band and other musicians as well as the remake album Mighty High with new recordings in reggae style and guests from this genre such as Michael Franti .

Before the next studio album, Andy Hess was replaced by Jorgen Carlsson on bass in 2008. By a Thread was released the following year and reached number 34 on the US charts. Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top was featured on the album as a guest guitarist. After that there were two box releases for which old live recordings were put together. Mulennium was the recording of the concert at the turn of the millennium on December 31, 1999 in Atlanta on three CDs. The Georgia Bootleg Box contains three and a half years older recordings from three different concerts in the state of Georgia on six CDs. The concerts all took place in the cast with the founding trio. With the bootleg box, Gov't Mule was also able to place itself in the German charts for the first time .

After a four-year break without new releases, which singer Warren Haynes also used for a solo album, the band went back to the recording studio in 2013. The album Shout! , which, in addition to the band's original songs, also contained a bonus CD, for which the same songs were performed again with various guest singers such as Dr. John , Steve Winwood and Elvis Costello were included. It was her first major international success and hit the charts in numerous European countries. 32nd place on the Billboard 200 is also her best placement in the US.

For the 20th anniversary of the band, an album with old concert recordings was released again in 2014. Recordings from the concert on Halloween 2008 in Boston , including a number of covers of Pink Floyd songs, have been compiled under the title Dark Side of the Mule . The title is a reference to the most famous Pink Floyd album The Dark Side of the Moon . This publication was also internationally successful. In early 2015, Sco-Mule was followed by older recordings from 1999 with jazz guitarist John Scofield and keyboardist Dan Matrazzo.

Every concert by the band can be purchased on their website in very good quality via download or listened to as a stream free of charge. It also allows its fans to make and exchange live recordings of their performances for non-commercial purposes.

Band name

Although the band name contains the abbreviated spelling “Gov't” for “Government” (similar to “Int'l” for “International”), the word is always pronounced completely, for example “Government Mjul”. Common abbreviations such as "eg", "etc.", "etc." or "or", which are also pronounced in the long form, are comparable in German usage.

The name "Gov't Mule" comes from the Mississippi slang for a big fat ass.
