The Hron (German the Gran ; Hungarian Garam ) is a 298 km long left tributary of the Danube. It lies entirely on the territory of Slovakia .
The Hron rises in the Low Tatras on the Kráľova hoľa mountain . It initially runs westward, separating the Low Tatras from the Slovak Ore Mountains . At Banská Bystrica the course changes abruptly to the south, at Zvolen then again to the west. From Žiar nad Hronom , the river then turns to the southwest. With a more moderate course it then flows through the lowlands in the southwest of Slovakia towards the Danube , into which it flows shortly before the state border, between Kamenica nad Hronom and Štúrovo and opposite the Hungarian city of Esztergom .
Timber was rafted on the river until the 1930s.
