Grand contournement de Paris

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Grand contournement de Paris or Great Bypass of Paris describes a chain of motorway sections, which are also known together as the fourth motorway ring around Paris and enclose the third motorway ring of the Francilienne at a large distance of 80 km to 200 km. Further inside is the Autoroute A86 ring road at a distance of 8 to 16 km from Notre Dame and the boulevard périphérique , which runs directly on the city limits of Paris.

The basis of the Great Bypass is the centralistic structure of France, in which almost all roads are designed to lead to and from Paris. Road traffic that does not want to enter the Île-de-France region still has to go there and find a connection to an outgoing motorway via one of the motorway rings. With the large bypass, however, it is possible to switch from one motorway to another, facing Paris, without entering the congested Parisian area.

The first variant runs up to the section east of Paris, which is common with the second variant, in the other three directions up to 80 kilometers from Paris. The second variant is almost ring-shaped and runs around Paris at a distance of 140 (northern section) to 240 (southern section) kilometers. Originally, the plans for the Troyes – Auxerre – Bourges section were supposed to be completed by the end of 2006, but after delays and a series of objections, the plans were dropped in May 2008.

Second variant

The complete length of the second variant is almost 1115 kilometers and the toll costs are 67.80 euros (as of October 1, 2011). By 2025, the A26 was to be extended to the A71 near Bourges, replacing the N77 and N151 as part of the Grand contournement. At the moment the construction has been postponed, as the current and expected traffic volume does not make a short-term expansion necessary. It is also planned to connect the A28, which is interrupted by Rouen.
