action

Wealthy, wheelchair-bound Joe McTeague is sneaked around by much of his family, who all have their eye on his legacy. At family celebrations together, they try to outdo each other. But when Joe presents them to his young nurse Molly Richardson, who woos him flatteringly, they fear that he will leave everything to her. They come up with the idea of finding Danny, the son of his cousin Daniel, with whom he has fallen out, because the young Danny was always his favorite.

Danny is a bowler and dreams of opening his own bowling center. In the tournament, with whose win he could have paid for this, he fails on the last throw. Joe therefore offers to give him the money if he calls his father and says he prefers Joe to him. Danny initially refuses. Nevertheless, he visits Joe again and sees how he is obviously getting too old to run his company. Joe then reveals that he plans to give Molly control of the company, which Danny tries to talk him out of. However, he tells Molly that he wants to give the company to Danny, which she also objects to. Daniel and Molly battle for Joe and the rest of the family, breaking numerous principles previously stated. When Molly threatens to sleep with Joe to get her way, Danny eventually invites his father over and breaks up with him, as Joe had wished. Molly leaves the house and Joe chooses Danny as heir.

However, Danny reveals to his girlfriend Robin Hunter that it wasn't his real father at all, just an actor he had hired. Robin is horrified and disappointed at what she leaves him.

Joe and Danny meet at his lawyer to sign the deed of title. Then the rest of the family appear with Danny's real father, revealing Danny's wrong game. While the family is still arguing, the lawyers reveal that Joe has already spent all his fortune. The relatives, including Danny, are angry and leave. While Danny apologizes to Robin and they make up, Joe's valuables are auctioned and he himself goes to a hospital. Danny finally takes him in because he doesn't want to see him in a home despite everything. After initial difficulties, however, it turns out that the bankruptcy was only faked to find out which of his relatives really loves Joe. He invites Robin and Danny to live with him now. When they accept, Joe gets out of his wheelchair and walks out first.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films wrote that the comedy was drowned in "empty din" and "gave away" the gags. The stars are not an asset to the film, because they "only withdraw their repertoire".

James Berardinelli wrote that the film doesn't know what it wants to be. Only the beginning is “brilliant”, “fresh” and “funny”. Phil Hartman played "perfect", but Kirk Douglas only "appropriate", especially since his role was not a "challenge".

backgrounds

The comedy was shot in Los Angeles and grossed $ 13.1 million in US theaters. It is broadcast on German television under the title Greedy - Erben wants to be learned .
