The place is about 10 kilometers southwest of Leoben , halfway between Sankt Michael and Sankt Stefan in the Kraubather-St.-Michaeler-Becken . Here the Kamsberg ( 683  m above sea level , about 100 m orographically above the valley floor) forms a loop of the Mur on the right bank , which connects the upper part of the basin, the plain along the Mur from Kraubath an der Mur and St. Stefan from the The widening at St. Michael and the confluence of the Liesing valley separate. The place is scattered between Murufer and Kamsberg, and the foot of the Gleinalpe in the south ( Schrakogel 1155  m above sea level ).

The location includes around 70 buildings, almost all of which belong to St. Stefan. Nevertheless, the 7 St. Michael houses, which represent the original location, and are located away from the center of St. Michael on the other bank of the Mur, form a separate village. The St. Stefan's location around the Meusburger homestead is made up of younger settlement houses and largely grown together with the center of St. Stefan. The border is the Lobmingbach , which flows into the Mur from the south, St. Stefan is on the left , Greith on the right , Vorderlobming towards the river . Statistically, they are counted as the capital of the municipality, but as is customary in the municipality they form an independent district. The municipal boundary runs over the Kamsberg summit and the threshold, and then to the Lobmingbach. The Hameta homestead up on the slope of the Schrakogel also belongs to the St. Michael district .

history

The French cross above the town reminds us of the battle near St. Michael during the French Wars on May 25, 1809, which primarily took place around St. Walburga , but in which no house went up in flames despite the fierce fighting .

The small town was divided on January 1st, 1981, and the Murtal-inward half was incorporated into the municipality of St. Stefan as a local development area. Since then, there has been a lot of construction activity here.
