Groß Luja , Łojow in Lower Sorbian , is a district of the city of Spremberg in the Brandenburg district of Spree-Neisse .

Location and accessibility

Groß Luja is about eight kilometers northeast of the city of Spremberg and is connected to it via the L48 .

history

Groß Luja was first mentioned in documents as Loyow in 1346 . The foundation of the town was officially changed to the year 1495 by the Meißner bishop after revised documents were submitted to him. Founded by Sorbian settlers, Groß Luja is one of the oldest settlements in the Spremberg region. The Sorbian place name Łojow indicates a loamy and swampy area. The addition of “large” serves to distinguish it from the nearby Klein Loitz . "Loitz" is the Germanized version of the Sorbian word "Luja".

Originally characterized by agriculture, the district is now a purely residential area.
