The Great Farmdenkopf is 868.7  m above sea level. NHN the highest peak of the Thuringian Slate Mountains in the district of Sonneberg , Thuringia ( Germany ).

Geographical location

The Große Farmdenkopf is the highest elevation of the Wurzelberg massif in the northwest part of the Sonneberg district southeast of Goldisthal , which lies in the deeply cut Schwarzatal , or northwest of the nearby Scheibe-Alsbach , which extends a little further above in the valley of the same river. The massif lies completely north of the Rennsteig and thus in the Northern High Slate Mountains .

Dominance and prominence

With a dominance of over 20 kilometers, the Große Farmdenkopf is one of the most dominant mountains in Thuringia. Only at the Großer Finsterberg (944.1 m) is its height exceeded in 21.3 km, on Großem Eisenberg (907.4 m) and Neuhauser Hügel (890.6 m) in 21.8 km to the northwest.

To get to Finsterberg you have to descend (at least) to a height of about 698 m, which results in a notch height of 171 m. The notch is located directly on Schwalbe principal on which the intersection of rennsteig near national road Masserberg - Neustadt with the comb traversing national road Gießübel - Oelze in the north-east of the Schiefergebirges is, near the interface to the Middle Thuringian Forest.

The Great Farmdenkopf achieves its long-distance effect mainly through the directly attached, at 877  m above sea level. NN located upper basin of the pumped storage plant Goldisthal , which is only towered over by the tree tops on the summit.

Hiking and viewing opportunities

A unique panoramic view can be enjoyed from the Großer Farmdenkopf in the Thuringian Slate Mountains or Thuringian Forest . The numerous viewpoints can be reached during a 360-degree hike (if you want to go around completely , you have to hike a few 100 m on a very narrow ridge) from the upper basin of the Goldisthal pumped storage plant.

You can see the mountains Großer Gleichberg ( 679  m , an Inselberg ), Adlersberg ( 849.9  m ), Großer Eisenberg ( 907.4  m ), Großer Finsterberg ( 944.1  m ), Schneekopf ( 978  m ), Großer Beerberg ( 982.9  m ), Kickelhahn ( 861.1  m ), Kieferle ( 867.2  m ), Dürre Fichte ( 860.7  m ), Bleßberg ( 866.9  m , with transmitter and observation tower) and Eselsberg ( 841, 5  m , Rennsteigwarte ) as well as, for example, the mountain towns of Neustadt am Rennsteig , Masserberg and Neuhaus am Rennweg .
