Greetings on the Voyager Golden Record

The greetings on the Voyager Golden Record form the second section on the interstellar data disk. Greetings in 55 different languages ​​were selected for this (German text: "Herzliche Grüße an alle").

In addition to these 55 audio recordings, there is also an audio greeting from the then UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim , as well as a written message from the then President of the United States of America, Jimmy Carter , on the record.

Choice of languages ​​and their speakers

The scientists who worked on the language selection for the Voyager Golden Record attempted to include the languages ​​spoken by the majority of the world's people. All the preparations and technical work had to be done in a period of a few weeks. Steven Soter from Cornell University provided a list of the most widely spoken languages ​​on earth. Carl Sagan then suggested that at least the first 25 languages ​​that topped the list should be included, should there be enough time and space on the record after that, should as many other languages ​​as possible be added. Shirley Arden, Wendy Gradison, Steven Soter and Linda Salzman Sagan took care of coordinating the recording dates and finding the right speakers .

The speakers of the greetings were selected because of their fluent command of the respective language, mainly native speakers and not because of any special scientific knowledge. They received no instructions whatsoever as to what to say, but only received the advice that the greeting was going to possible aliens and that the greeting message had to be short. Of the 55 languages, four are no longer spoken; they were selected for their historical significance. These include Akkadian , Hittite , Sumerian and Latin .

The greetings were recorded in the Cornell University Administration Building on June 8th and 13th, 1977, relatively close to the start of the first Voyager spacecraft on August 20th of that year. The waiting speakers heard the greetings of the other speakers in an office next to the recording studio in order to encourage a corresponding camaraderie. Due to short-term failures of corresponding speakers, some languages, for example Swahili , could not be recorded and are therefore missing on the record.

The group of scholars who studied the greetings were aware of the fact that probably even the most conscientious foreign language experts cannot decipher the languages. There was not enough space on the plate to include a kind of rosette stone with clues for deciphering the messages. Throughout the Voyager project, all decisions were based on the assumption that there were two audiences for whom this message was being worked out: first, for those on earth, and second, for those who exist somewhere in space.
