history

The place name probably means "a deep, fish-rich place in the Main". Numerous Stone Age settlement sites were discovered between Gruben and Hochstadt.

It was first mentioned in 1435, when Heinz von Schaumberg was informed about a construction on the Main "under the Kaczenczagel" carried out by the Langheim monastery . In 1451, the Langheim monastery left Heinz Mulner and his wife an estate called "Die Gruben" at Katzenzagel. Around 1530, the monastery on the Main near Hochstadt owned a fishing water, as well as a house, barn and other buildings called the "Grub".

In 1801 the so-called Gruben, a small fisherman's house on the Main, belonged to Hochstadt. In 1846 the Lichtenfels – Hochstadt railway line was opened near Gruben. In 1862 the rural community of Hochstadt, consisting of the church village of Hochstadt and the hamlet of Gruben as well as the wasteland of Geutersberg , was incorporated into the newly created Bavarian district office of Lichtenfels . In 1871 the hamlet had 33 residents, all of whom were Catholic, and 7 buildings. It belonged to the Catholic parish in Zeuln, 3 miles away . The responsible Catholic school was in Wolfsloch, 3.0 kilometers away . In 1900, 15 people lived in 3 residential buildings in pits that were assigned to the district of the Protestant parish of Obristfeld . The responsible Catholic school was in Hochstadt, 1.5 kilometers away. In 1925, 18 people lived in 3 residential buildings in the village. In 1950 the village had 24 residents and 3 residential buildings. It was parish of the parish of Marktzeuln and attached to the parish of Hochstadt and belonged to the district of the evangelical parish of Schwürbitz . In 1970 Gruben had 13 residents and in 1987 16 residents and 3 residential buildings with 4 apartments.
