Victoriano Cardinal Guisasola y Menéndez (born April 21, 1852 in Oviedo , Spain , † September 2, 1920 in Madrid ) was a Spanish clergyman and archbishop of Valencia and Toledo .

Life

Victoriano Guisasola y Menéndez graduated from the University of Oviedo with a licentiate in Catholic theology and a doctorate in canon law . In 1876 he received the sacrament of ordination and became professor of canon law at the seminary of Ciudad Real . From 1880 to 1882 he was secretary to his uncle, the Bishop of Orihuela , who appointed him vicar general in 1884 . From 1886 to 1893 he worked as a canon at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela .

In 1893 he was appointed Bishop of Osma and received episcopal ordination by José María Martín de Herrera y de la Iglesia , Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela ; Co- consecrators were Manuel Fernández de Castro y Menéndez , Bishop of Mondoñedo , and Valeriano Menéndez Conde , Auxiliary Bishop in Toledo . In 1897 he became Bishop of Jaén , 1901 Bishop of Madrid-Alcalá , 1905 Archbishop of Valencia and 1914 Archbishop of Toledo and Patriarch of the West Indies . On May 25, 1914 he was accepted by Pope Pius X. as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Quattro Coronati in the college of cardinals . He received the cardinal's hat from King Alfonso XIII. from Spain. Victoriano Guisasola y Menéndez died on September 2, 1920 in Madrid and was buried in the chapel of the Toledo seminary. In 1916 he was awarded the Grand Cross with Collane of the Order of Charles III. excellent.
