Gustav von Alvensleben (born September 30, 1803 in Eichenbarleben , † June 30, 1881 in Gernrode ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

origin

Gustav came from the Low German noble family von Alvensleben . His parents were the Prussian lieutenant colonel Gebhard Johann von Alvensleben (1773-1856) and his wife Caroline Friederike Eleonore, née von Alvensleben (1773-1826). He had four brothers, Werner and Constantin were also generals.

Military career

Like his brothers, he was brought up in the cadet corps and joined the Alexander Guard Regiment in 1821 as a second lieutenant . In 1841 he was appointed captain and six years later major , where he was transferred to the Great General Staff . In 1849 Alvensleben became chief of staff at the command of the mobile army corps in Baden during the Palatinate-Baden campaign . Alvensleben had been Chief of the General Staff of the VIII Army Corps since 1850, and four years later he was employed in the military government of the Rhine Province and Westphalia . In 1855 he was promoted to colonel , in 1858 to major general and three years later served with the Prince of Prussia . In 1861 he came to the King of Prussia as adjutant general . On February 8, 1863, as a Prussian adjutant general, he concluded the Alvensleben Convention with Russia that was named after him . He became lieutenant general two years later.

In the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 he served in the king's headquarters and on October 30th took command of the IV Army Corps . In 1868 Alvensleben finally became general of the infantry. He also took over the IV Army Corps in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 and led it in the battles of Beaumont and Sedan . He also advanced with his might against Paris. For his services in this war he received a grant of 100,000 thalers .

He said goodbye on October 10, 1872.

Gustav von Alvensleben died unmarried on June 30, 1881 in Gernrode and was buried in Ballenstedt .
