Gustav Hermann von Alvensleben (born January 17, 1827 in Rathenow , † February 1, 1905 in Möckmühl ) was a Prussian general of the cavalry .

Life

Gustav Hermann came from the Low German noble family von Alvensleben . He was the second son of the Prussian general of the cavalry Gebhard Karl Ludolf von Alvensleben and his wife Eugenia, née von Oppell.

Military career

Alvensleben received his education in the cadet schools in Potsdam and Berlin. Subsequently, on July 4, 1844, he was transferred to the 6th Cuirassier Regiment of the Prussian Army as a second lieutenant . From October 1852 to July 1855 he graduated from the General War School .

From a young age he was a well-known and successful racing rider. On June 24, 1862, he won the first Prussian army hunt for the King's honorary prize on the new obstacle course in Karlshorst as a cavalry master on the Wallach Cocktail . Franz Krüger painted him around 1855 on his horse Brin d'Amour .

During the war against Denmark in 1864, Alvensleben was a major in the General Staff of the Guard Infantry Division and took part in the battles near Klein-Rheida, Koograben, Kolding and Fridericia, as well as in the siege and assault on the Düppeler Schanzen . In the campaign against Austria in 1866 he fought with the cavalry corps of the 1st Army near Münchengrätz , Gitschin and Königgrätz . After the end of the war, Alvensleben was briefly transferred to the General Staff and assigned to the governorate of the Kingdom of Saxony. On October 30, 1866, he was then appointed commander of the Uhlan Regiment No. 15 . In this position Alvensleben was on 31 December 1866 Patent of 30 October 1866. Lieutenant Colonel and on July 26, 1870. Colonel promoted. Alvensleben led his regiment in the 1870/71 war against France in the battles near Colombey , Vionville and Gravelotte . Alvensleben was co-owner of Gut Woltersdorf near Magdeburg, which, however, had to be sold in 1881 due to debts that still came from the Wars of Independence. His brother was the forest master Gebhard Nikolaus von Alvensleben .

In 1887 he married Gabriele Freiin von Berlichingen from Jagsthausen, who was just eighteen . This marriage resulted in two children: Achaz von A. (1888–1976) and Oda (1889–1924), who led the Swiss lawyer Dr. jur. Paul Arni married. In 1902 Alvensleben acquired Möckmühl Castle (Württemberg), known as "Götzenburg", not far from Jagsthausen, rebuilt it, took up residence there and died there on February 1, 1905. His brother was the chief forester Gebhard Nikolaus von Alvensleben .
