Gustav von Graeve

Karl Friedrich Gustav Edler von Graeve (born February 22, 1792 in Berlin , † April 29, 1876 in Koblenz ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Gustav was the son of the Prussian war and domain councilor Johann Hieronymus Edler von Graeve (1737–1798) and his wife Friederike Luise Christiane, née von Hoffstedt (1766–1847). After the early death of her husband, the widow married the later major general Karl Pfendner von Merkatz in 1801 .

Military career

Graeve attended the Joachimsthaler Gymnasium in Berlin and joined the cuirassier regiment "von Heiling" of the Prussian army on May 6, 1806 as a standard junker . In the same year he fought in the Fourth Coalition War in the Battle of Auerstedt and on April 9, 1807 became a Junker in the Freikorps "von der Marwitz".

After the Peace of Tilsit , Graeve was in the Leib-Hussar Regiment from May 12, 1808 to July 23, 1809 and then came to the Brandenburg Hussar Regiment as a second lieutenant . In 1810/11 he was sent to the General War School for further training and was transferred to the Gardes du Corps regiment in early March 1812 .

During the Wars of Liberation he fought in the battles near Großgörschen , Bautzen , Leipzig and Paris , where he received the Order of St. Stanislaus, 2nd class.

Graeve was promoted to Rittmeister by June 1815 and was appointed company commander on April 5, 1816 . In the same capacity he worked in the 7th Uhlan Regiment from July 13, 1817 , was promoted to major on July 13, 1827 and was awarded the service cross in 1831 . On March 30, 1837, Graeve was briefly charged with commanding the 3rd Dragoons Regiment . He then took over the leadership of the 8th Cuirassier Regiment on April 13, 1837 and was appointed regimental commander on January 14, 1838. On March 30, 1839 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on September 10, 1840 to colonel . As such, Graeve received the Order of the Red Eagle III on September 23, 1844 . Class with a bow. He took his leave on February 7, 1846 with the statutory pension, conferring the character of major general . He died on April 29, 1876 in Koblenz.

His brigade commander wrote in his assessment in 1842: “The versatile scientific education of Colonel von Graeve, great dexterity, expert knowledge and zeal in service, which is shown in the excellent condition of the regiment, are to be praised and enable the named to be promoted in the Trip."

Graeve married Marianne Hyazinthe Ritz (1800–1872) in Potsdam on April 17, 1817. The couple had several children:
