Gustav Adolf von Ziegler (born August 8, 1808 in Berlin ; † June 12, 1882 there ) was a Prussian major general and leading German Freemason .

Life

origin

Gustav a son of the Prussian Colonel and Brigadier of the 8th Artillery Brigade Friedrich von Ziegler (1772–1844) and his wife Amalie, née Kypke (1782–1833).

Military career

After attending the brigade school in Koblenz in 1824, Ziegler joined the Kaiser Franz Garde Grenadier Regiment of the Prussian Army in Berlin and was promoted to second lieutenant until February 1826 . For further training he completed the General War School in 1830/33 and was a teacher at the combined Guard Division School in 1834/35. On July 1, 1837, he was appointed accounting officer of the 1st Battalion and at the same time Ziegler was again active as a teacher at the teacher and examiner at the Guard Division School. In this capacity he rose to Prime Lieutenant in mid-December 1841 and was promoted to captain as company commander in the 17th Infantry Regiment at the end of March 1846 .

In 1849 he took part in the suppression of the revolutionary uprising in Baden and the Rhine Palatinate and was wounded in Bischweier near Rastatt by a shot in the leg that prevented him from further field service. For his work he received the Red Eagle Order IV. Class with Swords and the Knight's Cross First Class of the Ludewigs Order . In 1853 he became a major and after assignments in the 7th combined reserve battalion and in the Landwehr battalion of the 39th Infantry Regiment (7th Reserve Regiment) as a lieutenant colonel on June 23, 1859 under position à la suite of the Emperor Franz Garde-Grenadier -Regiment appointed commander of Kolberg . On May 12, 1860, Ziegler became second in command of Koblenz and the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress . In this position he received the character of colonel on the occasion of the coronation celebrations of King Wilhelm I on October 18, 1861, and was appointed Commander of Minden on January 9, 1864 with the award of the patent to his rank . In mid-April 1867 he took on the character as a major general before him on July 12, 1870 awarded the Red Eagle II. Class with oak leaves and swords on rings with board for disposition presented.

For the duration of the mobilization on the occasion of the war against France , Ziegler was re-used as commandant of Minden. He spent his old age in Berlin.

Freemasonry

Ziegler was accepted as an apprentice on May 30, 1834, in the Berlin lodge "Zum Goldenen Schiff", a subsidiary of the Great State Lodge of the Freemasons of Germany . He was promoted to journeyman on January 5, 1835, and became a master craftsman on July 28, 1835.

From 1872 on he was the state grand master of his grand lodge , from 1877 on, as successor to Caesar von Dachröden as master of the order, he also held the highest rank of this Masonic type of teaching and was thus its highest representative. He held both offices until the end of his life. On January 23, 1882, shortly before his death, Ziegler was awarded the Royal Swedish Knightly Order of Charles XIII. excellent, reserved for Freemasons.

Ziegler was buried in the Berlin garrison cemetery; his tomb with portrait relief shows recognizable Masonic ornamentation.

Ziegler married Julie Bartuschek, called Spons (1815–1888), on November 20, 1837 in Berlin. The following children were born from the marriage:
