history

In 1574 Joachim von Byern received the Karow manor as a fief . The von Byern family held Karow for about a hundred years. In 1685 the fief went to Joachim Ernst von Grumbkow , a Brandenburg general , state minister and court marshal . The von Grumbkow family cared little about Karow. As a result, the buildings fell into disrepair and the manor was burdened with debts . In 1708 Marquard Ludwig von Printzen bought the Karow estate for the sum of 27,000 thalers . Since this was burdened with 21,680 thalers and von Printzen took over this burden of debt, he only had to pay 5,320 thalers to von Grumbkow. Marquardt Ludwig von Printzen had the baroque manor house built on the foundation of a previous building.

In 1773 Friedrich Wilhelm von Printzen , son of Marquardt Ludwig, died, whereupon his daughter Elisabeth Sophie Karow inherited all property. She was married to Wilhelm Friedrich von Wartensleben . In 1793 the manor was transferred to their son Ludwig Christian von Wartensleben , who on the one hand freed it from a significant debt burden and on the other hand had the manor house expanded and a manor park and avenues laid out.

Around 1810, a manor building was erected north of the manor house on a fieldstone foundation of a previous building. From 1833 to 1886 Gustav Ludwig von Wartensleben was the owner of the Karow estate. Under him, around 1840, a distillery was added to the northern manor building on a stone foundation. The distillery was built as an early neo-Gothic building. In 1886 Herrmann Alexander von Wartensleben inherited the manor and held it until 1921. An obelisk was erected in his honor in the courtyard of the manor house . The last owner from the von Wartensleben family was Friedrich Wilhelm von Wartensleben . After the Second World War, the manor and land were expropriated from him by the Soviet administration as part of the land reform .

From 1951, the manor house was initially used as a school building. Between 1955 and 1957 the building underwent extensive structural changes. The side wings were partially torn off and the middle wing gutted. The previous interior was largely lost in the course of this. The manor house was later used as a youth club and kindergarten .

In the mid-2000s, Birgit and Heinrich Baumgärtel acquired the manor house and property and several outbuildings. Since then, extensive and restorative renovation measures have been carried out. This was funded primarily with private funds, but partly also with funds from the state and the European Union . For example, the eastern side wing was restored based on the historical model. A roof renovation took place on the manor house, a lantern was put back on the former cowshed and the old distillery. In the manor house there are rental apartments and a kindergarten next to the owner's apartment. The renovation continues.

The Karow manor to the north with the courtyard of honor, renovated east wing and unrenovated west wing

The manor house is a three-winged, two-story baroque building. A courtyard of honor is bordered on three sides to the north. The central wing has seven axes . Three window axes to the courtyard and one to the southern park each include central projections . The main portal in the courtyard has two wings and is relatively simple. On the upper floor facing the courtyard, the window axes in the risalit are separated by pilasters . The rectangular gable of the courtyard-side risalit with an arched tympanum above the central window axis is striking . The coat of arms of the von Wartensleben family can be seen in this arched area. The windows on the upper floor of the risalits are arched windows , while all other windows are rectangular . Decorative elements in the middle wings are the floors separating cornice and square plaster . The windows are simple with window surrounds edged, the modeled by upward keystones crowned are.

The cornice of the central wing continues in the already completely renovated or restored east wing. Noticeable on the east wing is its tail gable facing north. The west wing, which has largely not been renovated on the outside, has been largely unadorned since the interventions in the 1950s. It has a simple triangular gable . To the west there is a one-storey extension with arched windows.

The south side of the manor shows the already mentioned uniaxial central projections in the central building protruding opposite the side wings. This has a volute gable at the top , which is set with two putti . The southern portal to the park is again largely simple. A six-step wide flight of stairs leads into this. In addition to cornices and ashlar plaster, corner pilaster strips can be found in the southern facade as decorative. The side wings each have widths of three window axes. The respective outer upper windows on the south side are crowned with smooth arched fields. The roof is covered with red beaver tails . Two dormer windows decorated with tails or volutes are striking in the attic . A walk-in lantern with a hood and weather vane sits enthroned on the roof ridge .
