The Hünenburg , also known as Frankenburg , near Rinteln in the Schaumburg district of Lower Saxony is the ruins of a small hilltop castle of the medieval dynasty type in the Weser Mountains . No names are known of the builders and residents, so that it was assigned later.

Geographical location

The Hünenburg is located in the Weserbergland Schaumburg-Hameln Nature Park, 1.6 kilometers north of the Rinteln train station and 1.4 kilometers (as the crow flies ) east-northeast of the church in the Rinteln district of Todenmann. North above the Rinteln locality of Frankenburg , it is located in the Weser Mountains at about 230  m above sea level. NHN high southern spur of the long wall (Hainholz) . Towards the south or Rinteln the landscape of the spur drops into the valley of the Weser .

History and description

During excavations in 1895 and 1897, ceramic shards and horseshoes were found, which point to a founding time in the 10th to 11th centuries. Coins minted from around 1080 relating to Emperor Heinrich IV (1050–1106) were also found on the south side of the Palas in Goslar .

Presumably, the two-part castle was intended to monitor and secure a pass between the Weser and Großer Aue valleys . The oval main castle has a diameter of 27 by 35 meters. It was enclosed by a mortar 1.5 to 2.5 meter thick circular wall, on which the buildings leaned. The foundations of the residential tower , the palace and a castle chapel can still be seen , which still show the remains of their Opus spicatum masonry. The excavated foundation walls have been restored.

The second part of the castle, the mountain-side front castle is from the main castle by a five-meter deep ditch separated and by a seven-meter deep moat and a rampart protected. The outer bailey still shows the remainder of a not yet excavated round tower . The castle complex presumably had a drawbridge .
