history
see: History of the Shark-Class and Detailed History of the S-Class
The Shark ( English : Hai ) was the type ship of the second assembly of the successful S-Class . This lot is also known as the Shark class . She was laid down on June 12, 1933 at the Chatham Naval Shipyard, launched on May 31, 1934, and entered service by the Royal Navy on December 31, 1934.
After the outbreak of World War II on September 1, 1939, the submarine was used in the North Sea .
The HMS Shark was spotted by a German aircraft on June 5, 1940 while on patrol off Skudesnes . Although the submarine immediately submerged, the aircraft was able to plant several bombs near the stern. The submarine was severely damaged. The rudder system and the depth rudder failed, causing the boat to emerge uncontrollably and push its bow through the surface. More bombing raids followed and the Shark began to sink over the stern. The ballast tanks could be blown out with compressed air and the submarine was initially stabilized on the surface. The submarine tried to escape using the two main engines for steering. But it was quickly discovered again by German naval pilots and attacked again. The commandant Lieutenant Peter Noel Buckley had no choice but to surrender. The occupation went into German captivity. Two British seamen were killed and 17 injured in the attacks.
The following day the German auxiliary minesweepers M-1803 , M-1806 and M-1807 tried to secure the badly damaged submarine. The HMS Shark decreased during towing 25 NM west-southwest before Egersund in position 58 ° 18 ' N , 5 ° 13' O .
