The HMS Subtle (P251) was a submarine of the British Royal Navy in World War II and after.
history
The Subtle ( English : subtle , astute ) was a boat of the fourth batch of the British S-Class . This lot is also known as the Subtle class .
The submarine was launched on February 1, 1943 at Cammell Laird in Birkenhead , northwest England, was launched on January 27, 1944 and was put into service by the Royal Navy on April 16, 1944. Although the submarine was part of the fourth construction lot, it carried an additional external stern torpedo tube , as is customary with the boats of the third construction lot .
The Royal Navy deployed the submarine under the command of Lt. BJB Andrew in the Pacific War .
On December 12, 1944, the Subtle sank three Japanese sailing ships with the deck gun in Malakka Street .
On February 7, 1945, she sank east of the Nicobar Islands at 7 ° 28 ' N , 94 ° 56' O a Japanese coaster .
On March 14 and 21, 1945, a total of three Japanese sailing ships with the on-board guns were sunk in Malakka Street.
On May 9, 1945, the Japanese heavy cruiser Haguro and the destroyer Kamikaze left Singapore to supply troops in the Andaman Islands . On May 10, the association was cleared up by HMS Subtle and HMS Statesman . As a result of the early discovery, the Royal Navy briefly set up a task force of two battleships , a heavy cruiser, two light cruisers , four escort carriers and eight destroyers in Trincomalee ( Ceylon ) . The Haguro was sunk on May 16 by the vastly superior forces. The kamikaze was able to pull away.
The HMS Subtle was sold for scrapping in June 1958 and scrapped in Charlestown-on-Forth in July 1959 .
