Hagensdorf is a village and cadastral community in the municipality of Heiligenbrunn in Burgenland with 193 inhabitants (January 1, 2020) and is located in the Güssing district in southern Burgenland.

history

Hagensdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1221 with the Hungarian place name Karachon . Karachon comes from the old Magyar word karácson, which means something like "Christmas". The reason for this name is likely to have given a Christmas market in this area. The German place name is only attested for the 17th century. It is believed that a personal name is hidden in it.

In the course of the 18th century, the Swabians settled in Hagensdorf. Under the emperors Leopold I , Joseph I and Karl VI. the settlement of Germans in the Hungarian Empire was promoted. So many Swabians made the long and arduous journey to Hungary. However, since the way for some of them was too long and arduous, many of them are said to have just settled here straight away. Evidence of this can be found, among other things, in the dialect , which differs significantly from that of the neighboring towns.
