Half century is a German television - tragicomedy by Matthias Tiefenbacher from the year 2012 . Martina Gedeck , Johanna Gastdorf and Leslie Malton play the friends Anne, Charlotte and Fiona, who are at a turning point in their lives.

action

The 50-year-old hand surgeon Anne Kater made it in life. She is successful at work, has a fast sports car and a chic house. But the marriage with the teacher Klaus, who took care of the daughter and household for years, is over. He left her recently and is, Anne believes, with a much younger woman. Their 17-year-old daughter Sophie went with him. In order to get revenge on her husband, Anne books the escort man "Josh", with whom she falls in love, on the advice of her friend Fiona for the upcoming surgeon congress.

Charlotte Merian, on the other hand, was a housewife for decades and sacrificed herself for her family. Her three grown sons still live at home, as does their mother-in-law, who has dementia and who she has to look after. After Charlotte is dubbed "Grandma" by a stranger on the bus, she wants to feel young and beautiful again. Encouraged by her friend Fiona, she visits a plastic surgeon to fulfill her dream of having a smaller breast. But instead of plastic surgery, she is diagnosed with breast cancer. Charlotte does not give up, however, but has her breast amputated immediately without thinking twice. She even found the courage to break out of her previous life, because she enjoyed the rest and the days in the hospital. She was never allowed to be so to herself, without any family stress. So she decides to leave her husband without further ado and moves in with Fiona until she has found her own apartment. Your family doesn't understand this, as they are now losing their cleaning lady, cook and maid for everything. But in the hope that this is the only way to completely defeat cancer, Charlotte cannot be held back. Since her family situation subsequently improves, her husband learns to appreciate her again, the adult sons move out, and the mother-in-law is given professional care, Charlotte considers going back to her husband.

The third of the friends, the boutique owner Fiona Gutzeit, has been divorced three times and tries desperately to stay young and attractive. She still believes in great love and wants to look beautiful and desirable for the “right man”. However, when she learns of Charlotte's illness, she realizes that she has to give her life a new meaning. Inspired by her gynecologist, who takes care of neglected children in her free time, she also takes care of these children and finds confirmation in them.

Anne gets into big trouble when it turns out that "Josh", who also pretended to be very much in love, is now taking advantage of the affair to blackmail her. He knows that in her position she cannot afford a scandal with a young escort man and demands 250,000 euros for his silence. In her need, she turns to her husband and asks him for advice. It turns out that he has no younger girlfriend, but that it is her daughter's friend who she had seen with him. Klaus advises her to pay the money. When Anne did this, "Josh" was arrested shortly afterwards by two plainclothes officers, which Klaus had arranged without her knowledge. The couple are reconciled and want to try again.

criticism

The lexicon of international films was of the opinion: "Top-class (TV) comedy that meets the strokes of fate of the protagonists with gentle humor."

The author Silke Zertz [...] came up with the story of the three friends, which is a little reminiscent of the German version of 'Sex and the City um die 50'. Zertz asks whether you have actually made your life what you have always dreamed of. If not, you can and should change it. TV veteran Matthias Tiefenbacher [...] staged this tragic comedy with a top-class cast. He reaches deep into the cliché box, from which the actresses still get a lot out.

'Halbe Hundred' is about age and how women around 50 deal with it. A nice film idea with Martina Gedeck, but not funny enough for a comedy, not decided for a drama. And full of clichés.
