Hallburg is a wasteland in the district of Volkach in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen .

Geographical location

Hallburg is located in the south of the Volkach municipality on the so-called Weininsel . To the north, separated by the Altmain, is Astheim , and to the northeast is the city of Volkach . Dimbach is to the southeast . The municipality of Sommerach begins to the south of the Hallburg, and to the west is Nordheim am Main .

The closest larger cities are Kitzingen, about 12 kilometers away, and Schweinfurt , about 22 kilometers away. The next big city is Würzburg at a distance of 21 kilometers.

In terms of natural space, the area around the Hallburg, Dimbach and Reupelsdorf forms its own sub-unit, which is characterized by large areas of drifting sand. This Dimbacher drifting sand area is part of the Kitzinger Mainebene in the Steigerwald foreland, which is counted among the Main Franconian plates .

history

The district consists of Hallburg Castle and an adjacent manor. The castle, which was first mentioned in the sources in 1230, was initially owned by the Lords of Castell . The building served the counts as a customs castle on the Main. With the Atonement Treaty of 1230, however, they had to cede the castle to the diocese of Würzburg. After several changes of ownership, the Zollner von der Hallburg received the area as a fief. They could hold it until the 17th century.

In 1634, the Counts of Stadion owned the castle and the district, followed by the Counts of Stauffenberg, who lived in the buildings until 1803. With the mediatization , the Counts of Schönborn became owners of the castle. From then on, the Hallburg district was co-administered from Gaibach, and the estate was created. The Hallburg was assigned with its district to the Volkach Regional Court , in 1955 it was separated from Gaibach and the first district to be added to Volkach.

Attractions

The well-preserved ruin of the castle is now a popular destination with a restaurant. The center of the complex is the keep from the 13th and 14th centuries. An adjoining residential wing has stepped gables. It was built in the 16th century and contains the castle chapel of St. Pankratius, consecrated around 1400. The nature reserve Wald an der Hallburg is located on the Hallburger Flur . The Hallburger Schlossberg vineyard is also grown here.
