Karthaus train station is one of the two train stations in the city of Konz . It is a separation station .
history
The station building goes back to a previous building from 1875, which was opened for the Trier West - Metz line. During the construction of the station area in Karthaus as part of the construction of the Saar line , which was to end in a new station in the eastern part of Trier near the city center, the old station had to give way.
After the freight yard , which is directly adjacent to the station, was closed, it was used from 1962 to 1976 as a locomotive graveyard for old, decommissioned steam locomotives .
Station building
Today's Karthaus station building was built around 1903/1904 and, in the form of a fairytale castle, was repeatedly expanded by one unit until it got its current appearance. The reception building, the outbuildings and the platform halls are under monument protection . The station building, which is privately owned, is no longer used today and is empty. Many station buildings along the Moselle route and the Eifel route have a similar architecture .

The Konz train station (popularly often called Konz Hauptbahnhof ) is the second train station in the city of Konz. It is located on the Saar line, and all regional trains from or towards Saarbrücken stop here.
history
The station was opened in 1895 together with the Saar line from Trier to Saarbrücken .
In the spring of 1998 a railway accident occurred in front of the Konz train station. In the process, a coal train from Saarland derailed and tore an entire track away, so that only one track could be used for several days.
Buildings and the station area
The station building of Konz was built towards the end of the 19th century . It is a testimony to the industrial and railway culture. At the time, as a railway junction, Konz was one of the cities in Germany where a large part of the population lived from the railway.
The building was built in the neo-Palladian style and is reminiscent of an Italian palazzo . As a representative building, it is a listed building . The train stations in Saarburg and Wiltingen (Saar) are also built in the same style, but relatively smaller than the building in Konz.
In the end, the station building actually only served representative purposes and as a waiting hall. The counter was no longer manned. In addition, instead of an underpass or overpass, there was originally only a level pedestrian crossing in Konz, and the second platform was not wide enough for use. Protection personnel were therefore always present.
At the end of August 2013, work began on building a pedestrian underpass in order to be able to reach the station more easily and without barriers from the southeastern part of the city. For this purpose, several tracks that had not been used for years were removed. The new platform 2 was approached for the first time on February 14, 2014. Since February 28, 2014, platform 2 has served as a temporary stop for trains from both directions, as the platform in front of the station building was also renewed. Both platforms have been in operation since mid-June 2014. The brownfield sites are mainly for Park & Ride - parking can be used. The station building is now empty. An investor has bought it from the city and wants to use it for gastronomic purposes.
A restored class 64 steam locomotive was installed on the vacated green spaces in the vicinity of the station .
