The Stommeln stop is a stop on the Rheydt – Cologne-Ehrenfeld railway in the Rhein-Erft district . It is served by the Rhein-Erft-Bahn (RB27) and the Rhein-Erft-Express (RE8). Stommeln is classified in station category 6.

History of passenger station

old freight and loading station

The station in Stommeln was opened on March 1, 1898 in the direction of Grevenbroich and at that time had only one track. The route towards Cologne was released a year later, as the construction work had not yet been completed. In 1905 the line was expanded to two tracks.

In the 1970s, the old station building was shut down and a much smaller new building opened directly at the barrier about 100 meters further south. The old station building also served as a pub until the 1960s and was sold to private customers.

In 1999 the siding, which was previously usable for special trains or for loading activities, was removed at the north end of the station in order to expand the neighboring warehouse and hardware store. The switch for changing tracks was not removed.

In March 2001 the station was modernized again and adapted to the new Deutsche Bahn color scheme .

From December 2006 to December 2009, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., the trains of the RB27 ended in Stommeln and drove from there to Rommerskirchen empty. Today the mentioned journeys with passengers end in Rommerskirchen.

In April 2008, the station building erected in the 1970s was also shut down, as the line has since been remote-controlled from the Duisburg operations center. The former local dispatcher, who had his job in the signal box part of the EGs, has been obsolete since then. For this purpose, a new barrier system was installed and the main signal at the station was removed.

In December 2008, the switches for changing tracks at the north end of the stop were also removed.

The breakpoint was thoroughly modernized in 2011 and the site redesigned. A new parking lot was opened south of the barrier system, and the old parking lot was reduced in size and converted into a waiting and parking area for taxis and bicycles. In addition, an electronic passenger information system was installed on the tracks, and a kiosk opened on the western track 2 in the direction of Cologne.

Freight and loading station

The Stommeln freight and loading station was closed at the end of the 1950s. Today there are still some remains of rails and buildings with loading ramps on the site of a hardware store. Mainly steel parts that were manufactured in the neighboring town of Pulheim in the former rolling mill were loaded at the freight station.

The freight yard was occasionally attacked by British fighter bombers during World War II and damaged in the process.
