Hanns-Ulrich Meisel

Hanns-Ulrich Meisel (born August 7, 1943 in Netzschkau ) is a former German politician ( Neues Forum , Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ), chemist and pastor. He was a member of the last people's chamber in the GDR and an observer in the European Parliament .

Life and work

Born in Netzschkau in Saxony , he graduated from the Philanthropinum in Dessau and studied chemistry from 1963 to 1968 at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald . He graduated with a degree in chemistry and received his doctorate in 1986 at the Institute for Photo Physics at the Technical University of Dresden . He also completed a distance learning course in theology .

From 1968 to 1990 Meisel was a research associate in research and development at the Wolfen film factory .

He was intensely involved in the Protestant Church and its peace movement . From 1976 he was a member of church synods , chairman of the committee for peace work of the Evangelical-Methodist Church and 1988/89 delegate of the Ecumenical Assembly for Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation . In 1996 he became a member of the Church and Society Committee of the Conference of European Churches and from 1997 to 2008 he was a salaried pastor , including several years as a hospital chaplain in the Martha Maria Hospital in Halle .

Meisel is married and lives in Dessau-Roßlau .

Meisel joined the New Forum (NF) in September 1989. In the Volkskammer election on March 18, 1990 , he ran for the electoral alliance Bündnis 90 , to which the NF also included the initiative Peace and Human Rights and Democracy Now , on list number 1 in the Halle district , where he was the only member of the list to enter the Volkskammer . His term of office ended on October 2, 1990 with German reunification .

In February 1991 he was sent to the European Parliament by the Bundestag group Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen as an observer for the territory of the former GDR. He held this office until the 1994 European elections .

In 1994 he ran unsuccessfully as a direct candidate for Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in the Dessau II constituency in the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt . He received 8.2% of the vote.
