Life

Gravestone for Hansgeorg Stengel in the Friedrichsfelde central cemetery in Berlin-Lichtenberg

Hansgeorg Stengel, son of a teacher and impressed by Erich Kästner , published his first poems in local newspapers at the age of 14. He lived in Brauhausgasse / Am Schloßberg in the center of Greiz. After military service and imprisonment, he studied German and later journalism.

In the early 1950s he moved to East Berlin . He first worked as an editor for the satirical magazine Frischer Wind , which later appeared as Eulenspiegel . Until 1959 he was employed there as an "editor for language and style", after which he worked as a freelance author.

After writing cabaret texts for the Distel in East Berlin in the 1950s , Stengel started his career as a solo cabaret artist in 1971. Despite his great popularity, he had no chance on television in the GDR , as he insisted not to have to make politically motivated changes to his manuscripts.

Stengel's trademark was his sharp pun, with which he took to the field against bloated styles and linguistic rubbish - so u. a. 1979 with the speech record "From Willi Wuschkes Geredeschuppen" and for several years regularly in the Ostthüringer Zeitung with his glossy articles, Wortadella , of which excerpts were published in book form in 1997. He wrote the saying: “The Germans cannot speak German.” Stengel also studied palindromes and in 1984 published the book Annasusanna about it . The total circulation of his 50-title work is two million.

In 1995 he moved with his wife to the western part of the now unified Berlin. In 1998 he joined the Bundestag constituency of Greiz - Altenburger Land for the PDS as a constituency applicant. Stengel died in 2003 on his 81st birthday. He is buried in the Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery .
