Hans-Georg Willert (born September 24, 1934 in Greiz , Thuringia ; † September 25, 2006 in Göttingen ) was a German orthopedist and university professor.

Life

Willert studied medicine at the University of Leipzig , which made him a Dr. med. PhD . Moved from the German Democratic Republic to the Federal Republic of Germany , he completed his further training from 1960 in surgery , orthopedics and pathology at the Heidelberg University Hospital and Zurich University Hospital . His teachers were Fritz Linder , Kurt Lindemann and Karl Lennert in Heidelberg , and Erwin Uehlinger and Max René Francillon in Zurich . In 1969 he went to Wolfgang Heipertz as a senior physician at the Orthopedic University Clinic Friedrichsheim in Frankfurt am Main. There he completed his habilitation in 1972. Appointed professor , he headed the Department of Bone Pathology. In 1979 he followed the call of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen to the chair of orthopedics. For more than 20 years he was director of the orthopedic university clinic. In 2001 he retired .

His research activities focused on osteology , systemic bone diseases, bone tumors and, above all, biomaterial . Known worldwide made him his publications about tissue reactions to implants and their wear and abrasion . He is considered to be the first to describe the loosening of artificial joints through tissue reactions to particles of polymethyl methacrylate and polyethylene . They initiate osteolysis and thus the so-called implant failure. Inspired by Rüdiger Döhler , he devoted himself to metalless in his last years . With his wife Gisela Wetzel-Willert, he dealt with the importance of psychosomatics in orthopedics. With Ingeborg Lang, he set up the first endoprosthesis register , which (like all later ones) failed due to data collection , data protection , indifference and a lack of cooperation.

Willert's estate is located in the Lower Saxony State and University Library in Göttingen .
